Good morning everyone, and how is your Tuesday so far?

This morning I wanted to share with you another one of my DIY craft projects. This twine-ball light garland was recently featured by Kat Williams on top UK wedding blog Rock n Roll Bride.

It’s one of those projects that’s a little bit messy and does take quite a bit of time, but it is soooooo much fun. Plus you have a really cool piece of decor at the end of it that you can paint in any colour you want to match your scheme, and when lit, it looks so very pretty, casting lots of patterned twinkly light everywhere. Mine is now taking pride of place in my office.

The How-To

I’ve seen twine balls used for all sorts of purposes, from chandeliers to pretty table decor, so I thought I’d have a go at making a light garland using this idea. I wanted something that would create a really pretty lighting effect, but I also wanted the string to have quite a strong and vibrant colour.

So I chose to use coloured twine, alternating between pink and purple twine balls. But what I actually found was that the glue and cornflour mixture tended to make the colour look a little dulled and whitewashed, it still looked pretty and works really well if you have more of a muted colour-scheme, however this is not the look I was going for. So to create the vibrancy I wanted I sprayed my twine balls with spraypaint once they had dried, this gave them a really lovely sheen as well as the strong colour I wanted, so this is worth noting if you want strong as opposed to muted colours. And of course if you are spraying yours you can use any twine, you don’t need to go to the expense of sourcing pretty coloured ones.

{You will need}
  • Twine ~ Either plain or in colours of your choosing
  • PVA Glue ~ About 1/2 litre
  • Cornflour
  • Warm water
  • Balloons
  • Marker pen
  • Vaseline
  • Old tray for the glue mixture
  • A broom or long piece of wood to hand the balloons from
  • Twinkly light garland to attach the twine-balls to
  • Fishing wire
  • Spraypaint in the colours of your choice ~ I used Rustoleum painters touch multi-purpose paint

{One} First of all blow-up the balloons, one for each twine-ball you want to make and draw a circle around the top using your marker so you know where to wrap your twine up to, then smear the balloons with a thin coating of vaseline, this will stop your twine from sticking to the balloons.

{Two} Next I tied a piece of string to the ends of each balloon and then around an old piece of wood which I had balanced across the backs of two chairs in my backyard. This allowed me to work quite easily with the hanging balloons. Make sure you have something underneath, like plastic sheeting or bin bags to catch all the drips.

Craft, DIY, Featured on Rock n Roll Bride, How-To, Light Garland, North West Wedding Planner, Party Decor, Pocketful of Dreams, Tutorial, Twine Ball, Wedding Craft Project, Wedding Decor, Wedding DIY, Wedding Stylist Michelle Kelly (8)

{Three} Now make your glue mixture, take the old tray (I used a disposable roasting tin so I could just throw it away afterwards) and mix up PVA glue, a few tablespoons of cornstarch and warm water. You want the mixture to be smooth, not too runny, and make sue there’s lots of it as twine is quite absorbent.

Craft, DIY, Featured on Rock n Roll Bride, How-To, Light Garland, North West Wedding Planner, Party Decor, Pocketful of Dreams, Tutorial, Twine Ball, Wedding Craft Project, Wedding Decor, Wedding DIY, Wedding Stylist Michelle Kelly (9)

{Four} This is the really messy part. Take the twine and dip it into the glue mixture, running it through so it is entirely soaked, then begin wrapping it around the balloon, both vertically and horizontally until you get the desired effect. I wanted mine to have quite a lot of twine so did this a few times. When you have finished snip off the end of the twine and tuck it underneath another piece so it doesn’t stick out. Do the same for all the balloons.

{Five} Leave to dry overnight, you will find that your twine balls have now gone hard, if they haven’t then just leave them a little longer until they are fully set. All the balloons on mine began to pop as they dried, but if they haven’t give them a nudge and pop them then remove the balloons.

{Six} You can now spraypaint the twine balls into your desired colours and attach to your light garland. I used fishing wire which is clear to attach mine. Hang with more fishing wire.

Inspiration: Fine and Dandy {A Gentlemans 30th birthday party}

So instead of bridal inspiration today I thought I would show you this party inspiration I put together last week for Rebecca Norris of Florence Finds.

Of course I am a wedding planner but did you know that I also design and plan all sorts of special occasions, from birthdays to Christenings, anniversaries to social functions?.

The party inspiration is actually one for the boys, they don’t often get much of a look-in do they? Well they do over here, and as of last Friday night I found myself sipping drinks with a lovely bunch of people as we celebrated a man’s 30th birthday with this theme……

When Rebecca recently asked if I could provide some inspiration for her husband’s 30th Birthday Bash I was absolutely delighted to get my teeth stuck into a more masculine party style.

I wanted to come up with something stylish and tasteful, with a gentlemanly vibe, yet still full of fun. The backdrop for this birthday bash is actually a former police station, full of exposed brickwork, copper detailing and sumptuous tan leather recliners, so I began to think about a design concept in fitting with the surroundings. Of course being at a former ‘nick’ my thoughts immediately turned to a certain detective character to be my party muse.

The character in question is our very own British treasure, Sherlock Holmes, who has bounced back onto our TV screens of late. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s detective is brilliantly eccentric – a trait which lends itself so very well to an eclectic and refined party design. Holmes is famous for his astute logical reasoning, his ability to take on almost any disguise, and his use of forensic science skills to solve difficult cases. He can often be found donning a dapper tweed suit, surrounded by olde worlde antiquities, habitually smoking a pipe and of course carrying the ubiquitous magnifying glass.

And so the Fine and Dandy inspiration was born, with a manly colour palette of amber and tan, tobacco and black, this style is full on masculine refinement.

For lots of ideas about how you can take the inspiration to celebration, head on over to see the full post here. If you haven’t yet discovered Florence Finds please do head on over and take a look as this is fast becoming my favourite women’s lifestyle blog, full of inspiring finds and really interesting articles that appeal to the modern woman.

Have a great day folks.

Celebrating achievements and becoming a radio star

Good morning folks,

I have just realised that due to a scheduling error my usual Monday morning bridal inspiration hasn’t been posted. Oopsie. So I am going to save that one until next week and instead tell you why I was drinking this over the weekend…..

Champagne, celebrating achievements, fizz

Last week was a little bit of a whirlwind for me, with a few deadlines to meet as well as progressing a lot of really fab projects. I met up with a handful of creative industry folk who will be working with me to bring those projects to life and to say I am excited is a little bit of an understatement. I so love it when people ‘get‘ me and my ideas, they are usually a little off-the-wall and different, but that is what I love so much about this industry, you can be so creative and really push boundaries. I am so very excited about challenging myself with these creative projects and hope they provide you with plenty of inspiration.

The other crazy-exciting thing that happened, which I kind of alluded to on here and if you follow me on Twitter you will know by now. But I received a phone call last week inviting me along to Manchester’s Arndale Centre to talk to BBC Radio Manchester about wedding planning. Thud….yes that was me falling off my chair when said phonecall was received. Once I peeled myself off the floor and pulled myself together, of course I agreed and then proceeded to poop my pants for the next few days.

I needn’t have worried though as it was all fine, yes I was nervous but I think I did really well considering how shy I have been in the past about this sort of thing. I was interviewed by Becky Want as part of BBC Radio Manchester’s Retail Therapy programme which takes place every Saturday morning, sharing my tips on creative ways to save money when planning your wedding. You can listen to the show here on iPlayer, my snippet is about 30 minutes in.

Having listened back to the show since I feel really proud of myself for doing it, and it’s another momentous moment for me and Pocketful of Dreams that I am making sure I celebrate and savour. It was particularly heartwarming to receive a phonecall from my Dad not too long after finishing the show, to tell me how proud he was of me, a moment I will treasure forever. Being a typical bloke, my Dad has struggled to understand what I do, particularly the blogging side, but this really helped him to ‘get it’ and I am so pleased he got to listen.

So the weekend was all about taking a little time out reflect on working hard, making progress and also to enjoy life in the here and now.

I treated myself to these gorgeous sparkly gold shoes from Dune (which you can also see here on instagram), followed by a wonderful afternoon of lunching in Manchester with a new friend. Rounding off the day with a slumber party at my friends house, lots of fizz, a beautiful meal and plenty of giggles.

Today I am wearing, gold shoes, sparkly shoes,

Today I am feeling really happy and looking forward plenty more exciting adventures. I hope your weekend was also fun-filled and you had time for relaxation with family and friends, it what keeps us going folks and what makes the hard work worthwhile.

There is a little snippet of party inspiration coming up this afternoon, it’s not bridal but I hope you will still love it.

Have a great day folks.

Inspiration: Under The Sea {Featured on Love My Dress}

Good afternoon all,

If you are a regular visitor to the blog you will probably know that I also write a fortnightly inspiration piece for one of the UK’s top wedding blogs, Love My Dress.

It is one of my favourite things to be able to to do, to deliver lots of new bridal inspiration for all you planning brides out there. I absolutely love dreaming up new design concepts and translating them into delectable mood boards. As a creative event designer this is the part of wedding planning projects that I love the most. The very start of the process when I really get to know my couples and their own personal styles, before throwing myself into researching and developing a concept for them that is full of personality and character. One that hopefully reflects everything they hoped and dreamed their day would be like, with that little added burst of Pocketful of Dreams style of course.

For me a design concept should tell a story, with the mood boards providing that story in visual form, one that is arrestingly beautiful, rich and captivating, leaving you infused with inspiration.

Next Friday my wedding planning series will continue where I’ll be giving you an insight into how I gather inspiration and how you can have a go at creating your own mood boards.

For now here are the moodboards from my previous Love My Dress post, please do hop on over to view the post in full where you will find lots of tips on how to take the inspiration right through to celebration, as well as details on those delectable sea-inspired finds.

Tipples and Treats: The Pastel Edition

For this weeks Tipples and Treats, my weekly food and drink inspiration, I thought I would actually give you an overdose of sugary sweetness in the form of these Pastel Rice Krispie Treats, as quite frankly I just could not resist this idea.

Full of childhood nostalgia and oodles of fun, I am so in love with the quirky kitsch-ness, not to mention the pretty pastel-ness of these treats.

Wedding food, Nibbles, Treats, recipes, Canape Ideas, Event Food, Desserts, Dessert Bars, Wedding Favours, Pastel Food Ideas (1)

They are not only a great way of adding a little pastel colour to your proceedings, remember Monday’s pastel wedding mood board? But also a super-easy DIY idea you can try out at home, not to mention a rather economical way of making your own wedding favours.

Who doesn’t love a Rice Krispie Treat? And when they look as pretty as these ones you can be sure none will be left hanging around come your first dance. Using a classic recipe, just incorporate mini pastel marshmallows which you can find here at £6.59 for a 1kg bag.

These treats would look fab stacked atop gorgeous glass cake stands like these:

cake plates, pastel cake plates, pretty cake plates, cake stands, wedding cake stands

Eddingtons 3-Tier Traditional Glass Cake Stand     or    pink large glass cake stand

Why not wrap them in cellophane bags, (you will find them here 50x cellophane bags for £3.70) attach a cute litte label and tie with ribbon for an easy-peasy and budget-pleasing favour.

A crazy-pretty wedding full of fun and flowers Part 2 ~ {Dan and Julia}

Are you ready for part two of our sweetness overload? Keep your eyes peeled for the most creative and brilliantly cute gift for the bride from her groom. This is THE best way to win over any woman’s heart I feel.

Photographer Sam Clayton continues her account of Dan and Julia’s wedding “After the lovely service everyone headed back to the farm and over to the marquee, the biggest I had ever seen. The dining It was beautifully decorated with floral decorations and sculptures as well as vintage place settings provided by the the fabulous Rowleys Catering. As guests relaxed in the lovely reception and bar area they were entertained by jazz pianist Mike Taylor on a black baby grand.

Big band singer Paul Pashley provided fabulous entertainment during the wedding breakfast, along with an impromptu version of ‘Sweet Caroline’ by a friend of Dan’s late father. The entertainment didn’t stop there, Rowley’s caterers  organised a ‘Host the Roast’. Nominated guests (unbeknownst to then) were invited to don hat and apron and bring out a joint of beef on a wooden carving board and invited to carve the roast for all the guests on their table. Dan presented Julia with a very cute present during the speeches, a black labrador puppy.

After the wedding breakfast a nightclub area was revealed to the guests, a stunning purple room, with black and white chequered flooring.  Dan and Julia started the dancing with their first dance ‘You’ve Got the Love’ sung by  their friend and talented jazz and soul singer Charlese. After an amazing set by Charlese, party band the Bogus Brothers entertained the guests into the early hours with energy and brilliance”.

Such a fun-filled wedding, Dan and Julia certainly puled out all the stops to ensure their guests were kept entertained all day long. I particularly love the Host the Roast idea, this is a really great ice-breaker especially when you have large groups of people who have never met before. And just how yummy does their vintage sweetie table look?

A crazy-pretty wedding full of fun and flowers Part 1 ~ {Dan and Julia}

Photographer Sam Clayton said: On the morning of Dan and Julia’s wedding it rained and rained and rained… whilst we were looking out of the windows willing the rain to stop a surprise present arrived for Julia from Dan, a lovely pair of bright pink Hunter wellies. As I looked across the farmyard towards the field in which stood the marquee I thought what a perfect wedding gift!

Julia and her bridesmaids were getting ready at her parents farm house, wonderful make-up artist Sonara Parker did a fabulous job with Julia and her mum’s make-up whilst the ladies  at Julia’s hairdressers worked their magic  on the girls.

The wedding transport arrived, a little country cart and horse provided by a neighbour, unfortunately even though the cart had a lovely little canopy the rain at the time was coming side ways so it was decided driving to the church in dad’s car was going to be the better option.

The rain stopped 10 minutes before the ceremony and it didn’t rain again until during wedding breakfast!

St Anne’s Church at Woodplumpton was bedecked with amazing floral creations by Margaret Mason and Dan had wanted a gospel choir for the church service so when I arrived I found members of the amazing Manchester Sing Out Choir serenading the guests”.

You can imagine that with such a fabulous day it was hard to choose just a few photos for this blog post so I have actually split it into two parts, here is Part 1 the bridal preparations and pretty ceremony…

DIY Craft Project: How to create a rustic table plan {Featured on Love My Dress Blog}

As it is DIY day on Pocketful of Dreams (I dedicate every Wednesday to creative craft projects), I thought I would share the details of one of my own craft projects which was featured last week on Love My Dress wedding blog. How to make a rustic DIY table plan all for under £20.

I am so thrilled to have my work featured, particularly by someone as fabulous as Annabel, she really knows the wedding world rather well and has such a discerning eye, as well as a really beautiful blog oozing with inspiration. So it makes me very proud to be a part of the Love My Dress community.

The fabulous photography is courtesy of North West Wedding Photographer Katy Lunsford, the chickens belong to my neighbour and I promise no chickens were harmed in the making of this shoot. I think they actually had just as much fun as we did, although one of them was rather curious about which table he was seated at!

For the full tutorial and more gorgeous piccies, please do head over to the Love My Dress blog.

DIY: A really easy and pretty pink flower centrepiece

Hello everyone,

And just how is your middle of the week looking? It is busy, busy, busy over here at Pocketful of Dreams I have lots of planning to do for forthcoming weddings and photoshoots, all are such interesting projects that I am loving getting stuck into.

Today is usually dedicated to DIY on Pocketful of Dreams, and by DIY I mean those little craft projects or ideas that you can try yourself at home, either something to create for your wedding day, for a party or any other social gathering you may be organising. Because Pocketful of Dreams isn’t just about weddings you know, I know I talk about them a lot, but I do plan other social events too, from birthdays to christenings, I’ve even been known to get involved in the odd corporate function too.

Anywho, today I wanted to share a really easy, yet oh-so-pretty DIY centrepiece idea. These would look fab at a wedding, a birthday celebration or just to make your table at home look super-lovely for dinner. It is rather girly and pink, but it’s more about the idea behind the arrangement, as of course you can change up the colour of the florals for ones you’re more drawn to, or more in keeping with your style.

Craft Tutorial, DIY, DIY Flowers, DIY Wedding Flowers, Wedding Flowers How-To

The galvanised metal tray, which I found in a local flower shop was a snip at just £8. It has three glass bottles contained within it, which are removable too so you could almost have two lots of displays from it, one in the metal tray and another just in the glass bottles. In this instance I chose to keep them together, and I love the contrast of the industrial looking metal tray against the perfectly pretty flowers.

The flowers I used include:

  • Pink Germini’s – These are the pretty pink flower you can see in the picture, they are a form of Gerbera, only smaller. To keep these flowers fresh you need warmth and bright light.
  • Veronica White – These are the white spiky-ish ones which curves out to the sides slightly, these are a good filler flower to use in displays and great for adding a little height to the arrangement.
  • And finally I used two other types of delicate white flowery bunches but I’m not 100% sure of the names, perhaps anyone reading this with more of a flower knowledge than I have can enlighten us? Again they added a nice contrast and I love how they are like a miniature version of the Germini’s.
Needless to say they were all readily available from a local florists, which on this occasion happened to be the lovely Kat Weatherill at The Florists Barrowford. I paid about £18.00 for the flowers and had some leftover for another arrangement, so all-in-all a quite economical DIY flower display.
As I have said before I am no flower expert in the slightest, but this is something I am so very keen to learn more about, so I will be practicing lots more arrangements like this and building up my flower knowledge as well as my arrangement skills.
I must say a massive thank-you to North West Wedding Photographer Katy Lunsford who is responsible for the very pretty photographs. Katy is someone I am so lucky to have met over the last year and I am pleased to say has now become a good friend of mine. She is an amazing photographer, seriously it has even been said she has a little magic in her camera, she doesn’t of course that’s all down to her amazing talent and brilliant eye. But she’s also really lovely too, trust me you need to spend your wedding day with a photographer you adore and I reckon you’d find it pretty hard not to love this lady as much as I do.

Free Workshop: Tom Barker Photography – Camera 101

Tom Barker Photography, Photography Workshop, Learn New Skills, SkillSwap (3)

I recently posted an idea called SkillSwap, all about us creative industry types getting together to share our respective creative skills and knowledge with each other. So when photographer Tom Barker contacted me about his free photography workshop I jumped at the chance to attend.

I first met Tom at our Christmas Tweet-Up in Manchester and spent the evening chatting weddings and businesses. Tom has a relaxed and fun approach to wedding photography so I am really looking forward to attending his workshop and finally getting to grips with my Canon EOS 400D digital camera.

So far all I know how to do is set it to auto, point and shoot. I would love to know how to take better pictures, particularly as a blogger as there are so many things I do that I’d love to blog about but I never have decent images to go with the posts so I inevitably end up leaving it in the drafts folder never to see the light of day.

The FREE workshop is taking place in Castlefield, Manchester on Sunday 29th January, 12noon – 5pm. There are just a few places left so if you do want to learn a little bit more, as well as having a fun day out then do contact Tom by email to reserve your spot.

Workshop – Camera 101

Foundations for Creating Better Photos

Learn your Camera, Get out of Auto Mode and Create with Intent. Welcome to Camera 101; foundations for creating better photos.

This isn’t your typical workshop looking at a presentation of photos whilst analysing shutter speeds and f-stops, this isn’t looking at photoshop images, this isn’t about using Auto Mode.

This is building block type workshop that will break down the principles of Exposure and Composition into something we can understand and use when shooting everyday.

Tom Barker Photography, Photography Workshop, Learn New Skills, SkillSwap (2)

  • Exposure - We’ll look at the basics of Shutter Speed, ISO and Aperture then get into their relationship and how you can use them to your advantage. Do you know what a stop is?
  • Composition - Starting with simple rules you’ll learn to balance your photos, we’ll go more advanced and dive into lenses to understand compression and distortion.
  • Controlling your Camera - Do you really know how to control all the aspects of your camera? Different setups work for different people, i’ll show you how I work and other ways you can.
  • Create with Intent - Chances are you’ve already taken some great photos, could you take it again? Could you make it better? Rather than relying on pot-luck we’ll learn to intentionally create photos.
  • What do you need? - Just your camera and one lens. It doesn’t matter which lens, it could you the 18-55 you got with the camera, it could be a prime lens. You don’t need to understand any technical aspects of photography before you attend this workshop.
  • Where, When & How Much? - We’ll be shooting around Castlefield nearish Manchester City Centre. The workshop will be held on Sunday the 29th of January from midday until 5.
  • The best thing about this workshop is the cost, it’s free.
  • There are only 8 places available, get in touch with an email to secure your place and for more details.
  • R.S.V.P tom@tombarkerphotography.co.uk
  • Find our more about Tom Barker photography here.

If you do book onto the course, please drop by and say hello so we can virtually meet beforehand.
