Dream Team: Welcoming Lottie Designs Wedding Photography

by

My newest addition to the Pocketful of Dreams Dream Team is Lottie Designs, hailing from Lancashire, and offering Wedding Photography in the North West. I was so absolutely thrilled when I first connected with Charlotte (Lottie), as not only is she local, she is practically right on my doorstep. It is so wonderful to meet other local creative businesses and even better when they evidently share the same level of passion and enthusiasm for this industry as I do. Lottie is one of those people and she is really lovely to boot.

Here’s what she had to say when we recently caught up over a cuppa…“Well I’m in my 30′s (not being too exact with numbers for reasons of vanity) and I’m an incurable romantic, I just absolutely love shooting weddings. Sometimes I can get so wrapped up in events I have been known to cry. I’m always learning too and I’m inspired by creative people, which means I am a serial wedding blog surfer and always collecting images for inspiration.

My approach is very laid back, I’d rather observe and document rather than direct and engineer. I have a quirky sense of humour and always try to make clients feel at ease with the process as most of my clients come to me dreading being the centre of attention. I like to make you feel like your day is easier to cope with, less stressful and smooth-running, and of course resulting in beautiful images even better than you dreamed imaginable”.

How did you get into photography and why did you become a wedding photographer?

Purely by chance. I’d been an amateur shooter for 15 years, I bought my first DSLR and thought I could take on the world. My partner and I were asked to shoot a friend’s wedding, he hated the experience, I loved it. I’d been a designer (web and graphics) for 12 years in my day job, but I was able to be more creative with a camera than I had ever been as a designer. I was then made redundant, got a nice good-bye payout, set up LottieDesigns (web design/graphic design/photography) started shooting semi-pro, then went fully pro about 12 months later.

Who / what inspires you?

My clients do. Sounds a cliché, but when they get me, we bounce ideas off each other and come up with something amazing and the images reflect that. I love to surf and soak up ideas, styles, lighting techniques from all kinds of photography sites, not just weddings. All these images are held in my subconscious and on a wedding day they inspire me to create better imagery and better usage of available light.

Do you have a particular photography style and can you describe it for us?

My style is creative, fine art wedding photography for couples who love life and each other.

What is the most challenging thing about photographing weddings?

Two things, our British weather and lack of light in winter and secondly educating drivers, MC’s, venues, DJ’s and vicars that all photographers are not the same!

and the best part of it?

The LOVE! The first look between bride and groom is the most special thing ever. Told you I was a romantic! Oh and I love details, details, details!

What advice would you give to couples when choosing a wedding photographer? What should a couple be asking their photographer?

I always say to couples that if you don’t like the personality of the photographer, don’t book. It’s such a crucial decision to make. Even if their work is amazing but they annoy you, this annoyance will multiply 1000 fold with the stress of the day. NB – avoid photographers with whistles!

How do you ensure the images you capture are what the couple wants from their day?

By listening. I always have at least two meetings with the bride and groom, talking and listening to their needs. Most of my clients already know my style before they meet me, so after the booking I talk them through the day, timings etc and we discuss how and when we will achieve what they want from me. I ask them to imagine waking up the next day having forgotten to take a shot with Auntie Nora, should we have a list of “must-have” images?

What are your thoughts on the wedding industry and how has it changed / how will it change in the future?

It’s amazing right now, the changes that have happened since I started in 2005 are mind blowing and this industry keeps going from strength to strength. Finally being a wedding photographer is being seen as a craft and I love it!

Whose wedding (past, present or future) would be your dream wedding to photograph?

Anyone that is truly in love. It could be a two hour weekday wedding on a budget or a lavish big-budget shindig in August, as long as I can see the love, I’m happy.

Who would you love to work/collaborate with and why? Do you have any plans to make this happen?

I already work closely with other wedding vendors, like florists and dress shops, and intend to do more of that this year. I would like to try and get some real wedding images published too. Watch this space.

Can you share with us a sneak-peak exclusive of future plans for your business / goals for this year?

I’ve recently started a new Boudoir Photography arm to the business and I’m going to create wedding photography packages for the Autumn including a Boudoir shoot for Brides to give to their grooms as a wedding present. Or first Anniversary gift.

When you are not photographing weddings what are you doing?

I’m a commercial photographer too and shoot for a few glossy mags. Other than that I’m walking the dogs!

What is your ultimate dream in life?

To be a full time wedding photographer with a camper van! Simple but true………. Oh and I’d like a Canon 1D x please.
