Dream Team: Welcoming Country Weddings Italy {Destination Wedding Planning}

Today I am introducing you to a superb wedding planning company in Italy. They have the know-how on everything wedding related in the country of Love. Here’s a little bit more about Country Weddings Italy, my newest Dream Team member…..

Tell me about Country Weddings Italy

Country Weddings is a wedding coordination and design business for overseas couples, based in the countryside north of Rome. We aim to provide a bespoke wedding service for anyone who is looking for that individual, personalized attention and approach that they would get from a wedding planner at home.  There are no set packages, no set styles, and what is more important, an unlimited amount of time spent on planning the whole event. We work with each couple to bring to life the wedding day that they have imagined and dreamed about. We can also provide our ideas and services for the entire trip to Italy, if the bridal party so wishes: accommodation searches and pre and post wedding celebrations and special activities to share with your family and friends. Cookery courses, barbecues, sightseeing tours, a day driving a Lamborghini or Ferrari round a racetrack or a relaxed post-wedding brunch are just a few of the ideas.

How did you get into this type of work?

I moved to Italy 22 years ago, straight out of university. I’m actually from Lancashire, an area of England that I still have very strong ties with and that I adore. I’m a linguist by trade and a crafter by nature! Daniela, my co-founding partner of Country Weddings Italy, comes from Naples and has a business and economics background with a personal passion for anything shabby chic, vintage and beautiful. When we met three years ago, through our children going to the same nursery school, we soon found that we had many interests in common and the idea to start a wedding coordination popped into our heads over a glass of wine in the garden one late springtime evening. We live in a beautiful area, just a few miles north  of Rome, and we decided to focus our business venture outside the city, amazing though it is, and that is how Country Weddings Italy was born. That makes it sound simple, but like any new business venture, the learning curve has been huge: a completed advanced wedding planner course, days on end searching for suppliers that suited our style and works ethics, many nights writing website and blog material, letters, promos, and just  generally finding our way around the wedding world. We are still at the beginning of this whole new adventure but it really is one of those dream jobs, where you actually really enjoy what you do.

Do you have a particular style and can you describe it for us?

We both have a love of anything original, shabby chic, vintage, rustic and genuine. Our choice of venues and suppliers is most definitely influenced by that. Daniela and I tend to find ourselves in agreement about most of the things we fall in love with, but I love the way I see things with an “Anglo” spin on ideas, even after 22 years here, while Daniela provides her perfect Italian view of “style”.

What / who inspires your design style?

We are most definitely inspired by our surroundings. Italy is without a doubt a beautiful country, and the countryside in central Italy where we are based is just filled with fantastic venues: castles, farmhouses, lakeside retreats and country villas, so there is no end of inspiration. I am also a crafter and make wedding venue decorations, cards and favours, which are very much influenced by my personal love of anything butterfly, flower and heart-shaped.

What makes your service unique?

Our total commitment! When we were researching the destination wedding market in Italy, we were surprised by how many other businesses were specific about the number of hours they would put into the organization, or how many hours they would be present on the day of the wedding, with any extra hours being added on at a price per hour. We also didn’t like the “package” idea, although we realize this may appeal to some couples, who want some of the time-consuming decision-making taking out of the equation. After talking to get a basic ideas for theme, style and obviously available budget, we will always present our couples with a choice, whether that is venue, flowers, photographer or any other sort of supplier, and we will be on the other end of the email, Skype or phone right up until the wedding to discuss changes, new ideas or additions. Once the bridal party arrives here for the big celebration, we will personally be on hand in the run-up to the wedding, on the day and also for post-wedding events too, if asked to. We will also have liaised with the embassies and wedding halls for all the legal side of affairs beforehand and will be present on the day to interpret at the ceremony (a legal requirement) and make sure everything runs smoothly throughout the ceremony and wedding reception.

What is currently hot in the world of weddings?

In Italy there is a general return this year to a love of things classic. Italian weddings from the dresses to the reception, have been very “sleek” in recent years, but there is a return to a more romantic, traditional approach.  I think that is a general reflection on an attempt to return to traditional values in Italian society, after years of everything being upbeat, expensive, ultra-modern. A bit “flash Harry” as we say in Lancashire!

What about future trends, what is going to be popular in the future?

I don’t know, but I hope our ideas on style will be popular for lots of couples! One trend that can be noticed in Italy is the growing popularity in contacting a wedding planner for your big day. A few years ago it was unheard of, but wedding planners are now an increasingly common presence in the Italian wedding cosmos.

Destination Weddings, Italian Weddings, Wedding PLanner Italy, Italian Wedding Planner, Country Weddings Italy, Getting Married In Italy, (1)

Which bride (past, present or future) would be your dream bride to work with?

Ooh, I really don’t know, there are just too many to mention. How about one of the great Hollywood stars from the past, or Julia Roberts, who stayed in a beautiful country villa in this area, which can also be hired as a wedding venue incidentally, while she was filming Eat, Pray, Love a couple of years ago? I’m a huge Adele fan, and I love her dress-style, so how great would it be to organize her wedding here? More generally, we would love to work with brides with a love of Italy and a passion for vintage or rustic chic thrown in.

Who would you love to work/collaborate with and why? Do you have any plans to make this happen?

In just a few, short months, we have had the opportunity to meet several people who work in this industry and who are so committed to their work. We hope most of all to be able to share our adventure with them and people like them. To name just a few, the photographer Fabrizio Vinti, the floral designer Rosella Antonelli and the wedding planner extraordinaire Sanda Pandza, all successful names in their chosen wedding-related have been so helpful and enthusiastic about our plans. I have also been lucky to get to know some British wedding suppliers, creators of gowns, accessories and stationery, whom we hope to be able to work with and recommend to our brides. I feature them on the blog that I write for Country Weddings Italy, so that people get a chance to see the kind of people we like to work with.

Can you share with us a sneak-peak exclusive of future plans for your business / goals for this year?

Our goal this year is to get a foot in the wedding market in Italy, and be appreciated for the quality of our work. It’s early days and we know it will take time, but we really want to be known for our commitment and dedicated approach to each and every wedding.

When you are not designing and coordinating weddings what are you doing?

We both share a love of animals and the countryside. Daniela is a great cook and dinner hostess. She is also a very “hands on” mum with her two boys. I love spending my free time with my partner and two sons and crafting at every given opportunity. I’m also a freelance translator, so there really isn’t a lot of time when I’m doing “nothing”.

What is your ultimate dream in life?

On a personal level, we both feel that we are very lucky people for a number of reasons, and that is what really counts. I personally can add that I would like to think that my children will grow up to be as happy and satisfied as I am. It might sound too good to be true, but that really is the way I feel.

Dream Team: Welcoming Corrine Smith Design ~ Bridal Accessories

Good morning folks,

Today I am so pleased to be able to introduce you to another superb Dream Team member ~ Corrine Smith Design, specialists in creating award winning bridal accessories and offering an unrivalled collection of handcrafted wedding tiaras, wedding headbands, wedding hair accessories, vintage tiaras and wedding jewellery to customers from their gorgeous boutique in Kilmarnock, Scotland. They also supply their beautiful ranges to brides, bridesmaids, mother of the bride/groom and wedding guests across the UK from their online store at www.corrinesmith.com.

I have actually been lucky enough to wear one of the amazing headpieces from the Corrine Smith Design collection, you may remember my little trip to a certain soiree not so long ago, well I got to wear a gorgeous creation called the Ophelia and I must say ~ I felt like a million dollars all night in my sparkly headpiece.

The lovely Corrine told me all about her exclusive accessories boutique….“I live in Ayrshire, Scotland with my husband and 5 year old son. I am a bridal accessories designer and I love my job!

Ever since I was a little girl I have been fascinated by the creative process and have always loved making things. At school I was encouraged to follow a more academic path and studied European Business Law at University. I always knew that I would follow my heart and end up where I am now. I set up my business on a part time basis in 2004 and over the next few years worked every spare minute building my reputation within the wedding industry. In 2010 I gave up my day job to run my business full time and opened my first boutique. This is probably the best decision I have ever made and my business has continued to grow and exceed all of my expectations. I have just recently moved into a much bigger and better premises complete with luxurious showroom, office, workroom and consultation room.

Do you have a particular style and can you describe it for us?

I don’t like to categorize my designs as belonging to a particular style. Being a creative person I am always exploring new ideas, styles and techniques. I love vintage and contemporary designs in equal measure and love to incorporate elements of both into my designs. One common theme throughout all of my work is the application of meticulous attention to detail and the use of the highest quality materials.

Corrine Smith Design, bridal accessories, unrivalled collection, handcrafted, wedding tiaras, wedding headbands, wedding hair accessories, vintage tiaras, wedding jewellery, UK, brides, bridesmaids, mother of the bride, mother of the groom, wedding guests (3)

What / who inspires your designs?

I draw inspiration from so many different places, but my biggest inspiration undoubtedly comes from the brides that I work so closely with on a daily basis. Most of the designs in my current collections are heavily influenced by the hundreds of bespoke designs I have created for brides over the years.

Corrine Smith Design, bridal accessories, unrivalled collection, handcrafted, wedding tiaras, wedding headbands, wedding hair accessories, vintage tiaras, wedding jewellery, UK, brides, bridesmaids, mother of the bride, mother of the groom, wedding guests (5)

What makes your products unique?

Each and every piece that leaves my studio has been made with love by myself especially for the wearer, which means that customizing an existing design is always a possibility. I think there is something really special about having a piece made for you, rather than buying an off the shelf headdress that may have been tried on countless times before. I am dedicated to providing my clients with quality products and I am also very passionate about offering excellent service on all levels and I am extremely proud of the fact that I have won the ‘Best Bridal Accessories’ category at the www.vowsawards.co.uk consecutively for the last 4 years.

What is currently hot in the world of bridal accessories?

At the moment I am seeing a move away from structured designs and an increasing demand for feminine delicate pieces with a slightly organic feel. Bohemian style headdresses and browbands are also very popular just now. Headwear that can be worn again and again after the wedding day is always a great investment and this is always something I discuss with my brides at consultations.

What about future trends, what is going to be popular in the future?

The trends in bridal accessories are very much influenced by the upcoming collections by bridal dress designers, and whilst the vintage trend is set to stay around a little longer I have seen the emergence of lots of classically cut bridal gowns with a contemporary edge and I’m really looking forward to creating some new pieces and getting started on my next collection.

Which bride (past, present or future) would be your dream bride to wear one of your designs?

I know it probably sounds a bit corny but I have a fantastic time working with all of my brides and if it wasn’t for my clients I wouldn’t be able to do what I love. Having said that I’m pretty excited about designing accessories for my 3 gorgeous nieces when the time comes for them to get married.

Who would you love to work/collaborate with and why? Do you have any plans to make this happen?

I would love to collaborate with a dress designer and design a range of headdresses to compliment a collection of couture gowns. This is something that could be happening later this year but I don’t want to give too much away just yet, so as they say…..watch this space!

Corrine Smith Design, bridal accessories, unrivalled collection, handcrafted, wedding tiaras, wedding headbands, wedding hair accessories, vintage tiaras, wedding jewellery, UK, brides, bridesmaids, mother of the bride, mother of the groom, wedding guests (7)

Can you share with us a sneak-peak exclusive of future plans for your business / goals for this year?

For quite some time it has been an ambition of mine to make my designs available to a group of exclusive stockists throughout the UK and further afield. Ideally bridal boutiques would stock sample designs and order from me when a bride orders from them which means that I can stick to my principles and still create a piece especially for an individual bride. This is another exciting development for my business and I am totally committed to continuing to provide first class service and beautiful products to my stockists and individual clients alike.

When you are not crafting and creating what are you doing?

When I’m not crafting and creating I’m usually thinking about crafting and creating. What I do is my passion and it can be very difficult to switch off completely. I love to spend time with my family though and Sundays are dedicated to getting out and having fun.

What is your ultimate dream in life?

For years my dream was to be in the position I am now, being able to do what I love as my job. I am extremely proud of what I have achieved so far and I’m pretty excited about where the rest of my journey is going to take me. As far as I am concerned I have the best job in the world and I am so very grateful for that.

Dream Team: Welcoming Leo Bojesen Wedding Photography

Good afternoon folks,

It’s time for me to introduce you to another creative mastermind who has made it into my Dream Team. As many of you who follow Pocketful of Dreams will know, only the very best make it into my Dream Team. These are the people who I believe have that creative edge and spark of brilliance when it comes to their craft, Leo Bojesen is one of those people. A wedding photographer, originally from Sweden and now residing in Sheffield, Leo specialises in weddings, engagements and lifestyle serving the Yorkshire area and UK.

♦  ♦  ♦

Leo (that would be him pictured below) told me all about his passion for photography and why he believes in capturing memories in a moment…..

When people meet me or listen to my voice, one of the first things they ask is where are you from? To keep it short, I’m born in Sweden, grew up in Ohio, USA, moved back to Sweden and now I’m in the UK. I might not necessarily speak with the Yorkshire dialect but have picked up a few sayings, such as, “Hiya, you doin’ alwight.” I’d like to think of myself as a happy go-lucky type of guy. I love to see new places and meet new people. Which makes wedding photography such an enjoyment for me.

Why did you become a wedding photographer?

I have always had an interest in art. My mom actually wanted me to go to university to study art. However, when I went to university I decided to study science. The love of creating pictures has always been a part of me. I’ve been into photography for the past eight years and instead of drawing on a regular basis, I now create pictures using a camera. On a wedding day, there’s a great variety of photography that goes on from macro to landscape to portraits while thinking on your feet which gives me a buzz.

Who / what would you say has been instrumental in your success?

I really like the quote, ‘Wherever you go, no matter what the weather, always bring your own sunshine’ – A. J. D’Angelo People enjoy to surround themselves with positive people. It boosts them up. If I can do that, I feel successful.

Who / what inspires you?

I get inspired from movies, fashion and travel magazines as well as travelling. Seeing new places is a great way to open the mind. I love new adventures. One needs to also keep up on what others are doing in the photography world. So many people nowadays like to share what they do to help everyone reach new heights. When I meet couples, sometimes one of them are very keen on photography. They like to ask questions and I don’t mind to share. There’s the saying that “a rising tide lifts all boats”. It definitely rings true for the photography industry.

Do you have a particular style and can you describe it for us?

My style is a natural timeless imagery that can endure for many decades without looking dated. I like imagery that is bright, colourful and fun.

What is the most challenging thing about photographing weddings?

The most challenging part is making sure that I don’t miss any key event. I need to know the timeline of the day. I’m usually pumped up with adrenaline, being attentive and yet also keeping a calm disposition.

and the best part of it?

The best part is feeling the genuine care that everyone has for each other throughout the day. I love seeing how the couple’s wedding plans have come together, what items they’ve chosen to represent them and what new ideas they’ve come up with that I have not seen before.

Bride and Groom, Contemporary Photography, Couple in Love, Dream Team, Leo Bojesen Wedding Photography, Getting Married, Recommended Wedding Photographer, Reportage Photography, Wedding Photographer, Wedding Photographer Sheffield, Wedding Photography, Wedding Photography Sheffield, wedding planning, Wedding Photography Yorkshire (5)

What advice would you give to couples when choosing a wedding photographer?

What should a couple be asking their photographer? My advice to a couple is to find someone that shares your vision of your wedding. Couples like to meet in person or via Skype to see if the photographer is a good match for them. You can see the personality of the photographers and know if you like them.  Another item is discussing family portraits. Some couples like a long list of portraits to be made and if that’s the case, ask the photographer if he/she is okay with that. Some photographers like to do only a few family portraits so the couple can get on with the rest of their day.  Having the same vision of the day is crucial.

A little explanation of the wedding photo above….“This wedding took place just outside of Sorrento, Italy. As the bride gets ready in the morning for a few hours, I ask the bride’s brother what he’ll be doing. He said, he’s going to the beach. I turn to the groom, “what will you be doing?” “I don’t know,” he replied. I swiftly responded, “well, I’m going to the beach with the bride’s brother for a little bit so if you want to come, you’re more than welcome.” Let’s just say it didn’t take much convincing for him to come along. We had a fun time together and this is one of the shots in the water with the Pompeii volcano in the background. The groom said with a smile, “as she’s beautifying herself, I’m beautifying my skin with the sea salt treatment.” That made me laugh out loud. Sometimes you never know what will happen on a wedding day.”

Bride and Groom, Contemporary Photography, Couple in Love, Dream Team, Leo Bojesen Wedding Photography, Getting Married, Recommended Wedding Photographer, Reportage Photography, Wedding Photographer, Wedding Photographer Sheffield, Wedding Photography, Wedding Photography Sheffield, wedding planning, Wedding Photography Yorkshire (7)

How do you ensure the images you capture are what the couple wants from their day?

Open and specific communication is the key. The couples come to me since they feel that I can capture their day as intended. They’ve seen my photo gallery and liked my style. If there are any particular images they want to be taken, I ask them well in advance so that I can meet that expectation.

What are your thoughts on the wedding industry and how has it changed / how will it change in the future?

The wedding industry has shifted to a more relaxed approach. Instead of cookie cutter type of weddings, more couples are seeking to create a unique day that represents them. We see some  couples wearing sneakers, suits instead of tuxedos or even no suit jacket but just a vest. Dresses have changed to different textures and colours and styles to make things more personalized. I like it when couples add special details to exhibit who they are. From vinyl LPs, sports equipment, knick-knacks and fashion stuff makes it a one of a kind wedding. That’s something I love! We see now that weddings are held in unique places such as in a barn or library. Some do what’s called a “first look.” Before the ceremony, the couple will actually meet, looking at each for the first time dressed in that gorgeous gown and awesome groom outfit. I get to capture that moment. It’s one of the few alone times they have together on the day.  A lot times, after the ceremony there will be a demand on the couples attention and having family photos and so on. The first look though is a moment of personalized magic that more and more couples are taking advantage of.

Whose wedding (past, present or future) would be your dream wedding to photograph?

I would simply love to photograph a couple who feel comfortable in their skin and want to have a fun day celebrating their union. And if that were to take place in the Cayman Islands, Tuscany or Bali, for a destination wedding, that would be so much fun.

Who would you love to work/collaborate with and why? Do you have any plans to make this happen?

I would like to colloaborate with more stylists and wedding planners. There’s some incredible wedding planners out there with different styles. One would be Mark Niemierko for the exquisite details of the wedding. There’s another wedding planner based in the States that is amazing, the one and only Michael Russo. I would like to collaborate with Richard from FXfilms and we are planning on putting together a project together this year. I’m really looking forward to it. I hope to also collaborate on a few styled shoots.

Can you share with us a sneak-peak exclusive of future plans for your business / goals for this year?

As technology progresses, we need to adapt. One thought is to move away from discs and advance onto USB devices for images to be delivered and digital downloads. I will soon add a YouTube channel to share little video clips of what I’m up to and give some advice. (If there are any particular things you would like me to share, let me know and let’s see if I can make a short video on it.)

When you are not photographing weddings what are you doing?

I really like food and enjoy cooking up new recipes. Especially Mexican dishes.  I love day trips. I enjoy reading about science and health. I have five brothers and sisters which I keep regular contact with. They are a lot of fun. I volunteer a portion of my time to different causes. I think it’s important to give back to the community and be a force for good.

What is your ultimate dream in life?

My dream is to be successful in my career, happily married and to create fun memories along the way in this journey we call life. Dream Team: Welcoming Toni Darcy Wedding Photographer

It gives me great pleasure to introduce you to another member of my Dream Team, Toni Darcy.

Toni is a young modern photographer with a really  forward thinking approach, she has an amiable yet creative personality which most definitely reflects her approach to capturing really beautiful and personal images.

I asked Toni a few questions to get to know the lady behind the lens a little more….

Toni Darcy, Wedding Photographer, Lancashire Wedding Photography, North West Wedding Photography, Lifestyle Photographer, lifestyle portraiture (10)

Tell me about your approach to photography

I have been described as…A creative box of tricks, always looking for the wow factor and having the vision and energy to find it. My passion is to create beautiful images that are personal and unique.

Toni Darcy, Wedding Photographer, Lancashire Wedding Photography, North West Wedding Photography, Lifestyle Photographer, lifestyle portraiture (2)

How did you get into photography and why did you become a wedding photographer?

Weddings are so precious and personal. It’s not just the wedding day alone that I love, it’s the months before and the after too. My favourite moments are most definitely the hustle and bustle before the ceremony and those tiny glances that relay true love. Photographing weddings enables me to capture these intimate moments and make them last a lifetime.

Toni Darcy, Wedding Photographer, Lancashire Wedding Photography, North West Wedding Photography, Lifestyle Photographer, lifestyle portraiture (3)

Who / what would you say has been instrumental in your success?

I honestly believe that if you are passionate about something you will do anything to make it happen. I’m lucky that I have a great network of friends, two of whom are also professional photographers, Nicola from Create Studios and Erica of Erica Boys Photography have not only helped me gain more knowledge as a photographer but they have also encouraged me to develop my own style. In the photography industry people do help and inspire one another – like a big family.

Toni Darcy, Wedding Photographer, Lancashire Wedding Photography, North West Wedding Photography, Lifestyle Photographer, lifestyle portraiture (4)

Who / what inspires you?

I’m inspired mainly by people’s reactions and emotions.

Toni Darcy, Wedding Photographer, Lancashire Wedding Photography, North West Wedding Photography, Lifestyle Photographer, lifestyle portraiture (5)

Do you have a particular photography style and can you describe it for us?

My style is very relaxed and informal, to see but not be seen. To capture your whole wedding day in a natural way that tells a story that’s unique to you. I also like to take you as the new couple away for an intimate portrait shoot which encases your love for each other, with minimal direction. During this time I like to capture the individual personality of the couple, by using natural light, bold colours and creative angles.

Toni Darcy, Wedding Photographer, Lancashire Wedding Photography, North West Wedding Photography, Lifestyle Photographer, lifestyle portraiture (7)

What is the most challenging thing about photographing weddings?

Every wedding is a new challenge, that’s what I love! The most challenging things are timing natural reactions and low lighting! I request to meet the couple at the wedding venue beforehand to pick the best photo opportunities, by accessing the light and space.

Toni Darcy, Wedding Photographer, Lancashire Wedding Photography, North West Wedding Photography, Lifestyle Photographer, lifestyle portraiture (12)

Toni Darcy, Wedding Photographer, Lancashire Wedding Photography, North West Wedding Photography, Lifestyle Photographer, lifestyle portraiture (15)

and the best part of it?

EVERYTHING! The whole day is an adrenaline rush!

Toni Darcy, Wedding Photographer, Lancashire Wedding Photography, North West Wedding Photography, Lifestyle Photographer, lifestyle portraiture (16)

What advice would you give to couples when choosing a wedding photographer? What should a couple be asking their photographer?

A great relationship!.. You need to feel totally relaxed and comfortable around your wedding photographer. You need to feel confident that they can produce everything that is required on your big day. You need to assess if they are right for you, view their recent work and also ask them to confirm the process before and after your wedding.

Toni Darcy, Wedding Photographer, Lancashire Wedding Photography, North West Wedding Photography, Lifestyle Photographer, lifestyle portraiture (17)

How do you ensure the images you capture are what the couple wants from their day?

All my wedding packages offer a pre-wedding shoot and several informal chats to discuss specific needs. There’s also the reassurance that I’m at the end of the telephone.

Toni Darcy, Wedding Photographer, Lancashire Wedding Photography, North West Wedding Photography, Lifestyle Photographer, lifestyle portraiture (18)

What are your thoughts on the wedding industry and how has it changed / how will it change in the future?

There is so much room for more experimentation, room for people to become even more imaginative and personal.

Toni Darcy, Wedding Photographer, Lancashire Wedding Photography, North West Wedding Photography, Lifestyle Photographer, lifestyle portraiture (19)

Whose wedding (past, present or future) would be your dream wedding to photograph?

Honest answer… Lady Gaga.. Why? Because her unique style and attention to detail would challenge my creativity and skills to capture her eccentric personality.

Toni Darcy, Wedding Photographer, Lancashire Wedding Photography, North West Wedding Photography, Lifestyle Photographer, lifestyle portraiture (6)

Who would you love to work/collaborate with and why? Do you have any plans to make this happen?

I would love to work with so many photographers, it’s an industry where people are inspired by one another to be more creative and imaginative.

Toni Darcy, Wedding Photographer, Lancashire Wedding Photography, North West Wedding Photography, Lifestyle Photographer, lifestyle portraiture (9)

Can you share with us a sneak-peak exclusive of future plans for your business / goals for this year?

A new challenging project is my 366.. A photo taken everyday for a whole leap year, it is something that I am so excited about, it’s like a photo diary..

I’m also excited about my brand new website and blog to be launched in early spring.

Toni Darcy, Wedding Photographer, Lancashire Wedding Photography, North West Wedding Photography, Lifestyle Photographer, lifestyle portraiture (14)

When you are not photographing weddings what are you doing?

Skiing, travelling, catching up with friends and entertaining my live wire border collie!

What is your ultimate dream in life?

I dream big… I aim high!.

Thanks so much Toni for sharing this insight into her work, and I hope you agree a really beautiful selection of images that represent her unique style. If you are looking for a wedding photographer based in the North West please do check out the Toni Darcy Photography website and if you make an enquiry be sure to mention Pocketful of Dreams.

Silver Sixpence explores why the garter is your Valentines must have accessory for 2012

If you’re a regular follower of the Pocketful of Dreams blog you will know how much I love Nicola of Silver Sixpence in her Shoe, a vintage-inspired, bespoke, bridal accessories designer based in South Manchester. Who is also a member of my Dream Team.

Well today folks Nicola wants to talk about that long-lost accessory that love forgot, until now, The Garter. And she is offering readers a very special offer for orders received before Valentines Day….

Bridal Accessories, Etsy, Garter, Silver Sixpence in Her Shoe, valentines, Vintage Inspired, wedding accessories (1)

“Valentines 2012 is the year to dress your pins in one of Silver Sixpence’s beautiful, bespoke garters handcrafted in luxury fabrics such as antique lace and silk dupion and are perfectly finished with a one-off jewel.

Bridal Accessories, Etsy, Garter, Silver Sixpence in Her Shoe, valentines, Vintage Inspired, wedding accessories (3)

Subtle but sexy, the garter originates back to the 18th century in which grooms would remove their bride’s garter using their teeth and toss into a crowd of unmarried men. The tradition was meant to bring good luck, similar to the tradition of brides tossing their bouquet, which is not nearly half as sexy! In the later years of the 1930’s and 40’s garters merged into fashion and were used by women to carry their small valuables such as cigarettes, petite eau de perfumes and lipsticks. A tradition I wish still existed, sounds very French!

For this year’s February 14th, why not go the whole Shabang! and accompany your matching undies with a little lace love for your leg?”

Dream Team: Welcoming Britten {Timeless Bridal Accessories ~ Made in the UK}

Good afternoon,

And just how is your middle of the week going? I have to say mine is panning out rather well, I’ve had several pieces of great and also rather unexpected news this week which have made me very happy indeed. I think it is so true that the more you have a positive outlook on life, the more positive opportunities come your way. My mantra recently has been “positive thoughts bring positive things”. So far it’s working and 2012 is proving to be a year full of opportunity, after a few years which have been rather hard and draining, it’s such a nice place to be in. Long may it continue.

And the latest addition to my Dream team certainly knows a thing or two about seizing opportunities. Sarah Jane Bates has created a successful online boutique, Britten, full of original wedding accessories, ranging from peacock feather fans, to garters, to hair combs to feather buttonholes. Sarah told me all about the ethos behind Britten…..

Bridal Accessories, Bridal Garter, Bridal Hair Accessory, bridal hair combs, Bridal Shoe Clips, Britten, Britten bags, feather buttonholes, Lace Garter, Made in the UK, Timeless wedding accessories. Peacock feather fans, Vintage Bridal Accessories, Vintage Headpieces, Vintage Veils (12)

How did you get into this type of work?

I have been designing accessories since I was little. After studying accessory design at Cordwainers College (LCF) I set up my own online business focusing on handmade handbags and accessories. When my husband and I got married in November 2010 (best.day.ever) our wedding was loosely based on 1920s. We wanted to use peacock feathers in the bouquets. At first my bouquet was going to be a combination of flowers and feathers, this would have been beautiful but I wanted to carry something down the aisle that I could keep forever. Inspired by old photographs of the twenties I came up with peacock feather fans. There were so many lovely comments about the fans that I decided to add a wedding range to my boutique.

Do you have a particular style and can you describe it for us?

I am inspired by everything from 1920’s to 1950’s and this is reflected in my work.

Bridal Accessories, Bridal Garter, Bridal Hair Accessory, bridal hair combs, Bridal Shoe Clips, Britten, Britten bags, feather buttonholes, Lace Garter, Made in the UK, Timeless wedding accessories. Peacock feather fans, Vintage Bridal Accessories, Vintage Headpieces, Vintage Veils (11)

What / who inspires your designs?

I’m always trying to recreate that feeling of timeless old world glamour, I love looking at old photographs. But nothing inspires me more than surrounding myself with beautiful materials. I shut myself in my studio and get out my box of treasures- feathers, pearls, ribbon, lace, beads and everything in between and I’m lost for hours.

Bridal Accessories, Bridal Garter, Bridal Hair Accessory, bridal hair combs, Bridal Shoe Clips, Britten, Britten bags, feather buttonholes, Lace Garter, Made in the UK, Timeless wedding accessories. Peacock feather fans, Vintage Bridal Accessories, Vintage Headpieces, Vintage Veils (9)

What makes your products unique?

I’m a big fan of individuality and hate mass produced items. I make everything myself in my little studio outside Bath. I try to create timeless pieces rather than follow trends.

What is currently hot in the world of bridal accessories?

Fans, brooch bouquets, hairpieces, headbands, feathers, birdcage veils, juliet veils, I could go on forever, there is such an amazing range of accessories on offer to brides at the moment. Which is great as I think it is important to find a piece you really love rather than just go with what is currently ‘hot.’

What about future trends, what is going to be popular in the future?

I take trends (particularly wedding trends) with a pinch of salt, I encourage my brides and grooms to go for timeless pieces.  If you are in love with a particular trend then great, go with it- make it work for you. Don’t just go for bunting and cupcakes (which I happen to love) because it’s a big trend right now if it’s not you.

Which bride (past, present or future) would be your dream bride to wear one of your designs?

Gemma Arterton, (my girl crush) I think she is beautiful and the perfect English rose.

Who would you love to work/collaborate with and why? Do you have any plans to make this happen?

There are so many people I admire, I couldn’t possibly list them all! I’m just finding my feet in this amazing industry. I haven’t collaborated with anyone yet but it is certainly on the cards for 2012!

Can you share with us a sneak-peak exclusive of future plans for your business / goals for this year?

It is still very early days for Britten and I’m exhibiting at my first fairs over the next few months. I’m also working on a new range to include vintage inspired bridal bags which I hope to introduce at the fairs.

When you are not crafting and creating what are you doing?

Walking my crazy puppy, Alfie; relaxing with my lovely hubby; browsing flea markets and spending long lazy afternoons in pubs with friends.

What is your ultimate dream in life?

To stay as happy as I am now- super cheesy I know, sorry guys!

♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦

Ah that’s such a lovely sentiment from Sarah and I do agree spending a lazy afternoon with friends over a few glasses of your favourite tipple is definitely one of life’s great pleasures. It’s also great to hear from another inspiring creative lady about forging forward with a successful business.

I am very proud to have Britten-Bags as a member of my dream team. Please do check out their accessories and handbags, I am sure you will find something to fall in love with.

Dream Team: Welcoming Silver Sixpence in her Shoe {Vintage Bridal Accessories}

Today isn’t so much as a welcome to my Dream Team, but rather a big fat friendly hello again to the lovely Nicola of Silver Sixpence in her Shoe. Nicola was one of the very first people I met when I first dipped my toe into the wedding world and I have loved watching her business grow and grow. Nicola creates really lovely handmade bridal accessories for the modern yet vintage inspired bride. Everything is designed and custom-made in-house, from veils and headpieces, to garters and even shoe clips, you will always find something inspiring and gorgeous at Silver Sixpence.

We recently caught up and chatted all things wedding as I learnt more about the lady behind this truly unique and lovely business that is Silver Sixpence in her Shoe

“I live in South Manchester with my husband and 18 month old son. I love vintage, good design, clothes, weddings and general girliness! Too much stuff is badly designed and poorly made these days. People need to demand more and I am passionate about that, so Silver Sixpence in her Shoe aims to tackle it. My contemporary bridal accessories are designed in house and custom made using unique materials so you will receive something truly individual. I also run workshops and private parties alongside the collection where people can come along and have a go at learning how to craft their own accessories. Perfect for the modern DIY bride!”

Bridal Accessories, Bridal Hair Accessory, Vintage Bridal Accessories, Silver Sixpence in Her Shoe, Manchester Bridal Supplier, Vintage Veils, Vintage Headpieces, Bridal Garter, Lace Garter, Bridal Shoe Clips, Fascinator making workshops (8)

How did you get into this type of work?

Pure and simple, the cliché of my own wedding day. I spent years as a fashion buyer prior to doing this. I wanted a fashionable but well made and classic dress and I managed to find this but didn’t go down the route of traditional wedding dresses. Instead I opted for a silk chiffon evening dress. It all happened completely by accident but felt very serendipitous. Veils looked wrong with it- I loved birdcage veils but short of finding a damaged vintage one I wasn’t having a lot of luck. So I set to work making my own. I have always sewn since I was young and obviously as a fashion buyer I do have a background and a degree in fashion design. I used the off cuts from the dress alterations ( a service I always offer my brides to keep costs down and get that perfect match) It rolled from there and I ended up making my garter too alongside lots of our details for the day. People kept asking about my accessories and I started to make for others through recommendations. Within a few months I had quit my job and started doing this full time. 2011 has been crazy. I could never have dreamed this would have grown so quickly and I am so grateful to everyone who has supported me. The parties in particular have rocketed for me and I am very full already for 2012. I think people are really keen to learn new skills and put their own heart and soul into DIY touches for their wedding day.

Do you have a particular style and can you describe it for us?

Vintage inspired, modern and classic all at once. These things are so important on your big day as you don’t want to look back at photos in 20 years time and feel they look dated. The 2012 collection has been inspired by the discovery of a box of antique handmade laces. They have been lovingly restored, adorned with vintage pearls and sparkles and updated into contemporary pieces that every bride will love. This sort of sums up my style really. Something old into something new….

Bridal Accessories, Bridal Hair Accessory, Vintage Bridal Accessories, Silver Sixpence in Her Shoe, Manchester Bridal Supplier, Vintage Veils, Vintage Headpieces, Bridal Garter, Lace Garter, Bridal Shoe Clips, Fascinator making workshops (2)

What / who inspires your designs?

Absolutely 100% it is my materials for the seasonal collections. I am always scouring 2nd hand shops and vintage fairs for inspiration. Of course wedding and fashion trends are important too, they influence our choices more than any of us realise but I think it is very important to work with a bride on her individual style needs. So when I am working on a bespoke piece the bride is my biggest inspiration.

What makes your products unique?

I love the traditions that surround a wedding day and I love to keep these alive through thoughtful little touches in my work. There will always be something blue in your garter, even if it just a single blue pearl. These pieces are the heirlooms of the future that can be passed to your daughters so I love to make things that are timeless. The business name gives a big nod to that traditional wedding day rhyme. All my brides receive a special secret gift for their day in relation to this, from me.

Bridal Accessories, Bridal Hair Accessory, Vintage Bridal Accessories, Silver Sixpence in Her Shoe, Manchester Bridal Supplier, Vintage Veils, Vintage Headpieces, Bridal Garter, Lace Garter, Bridal Shoe Clips, Fascinator making workshops (5)

What is currently hot in the world of bridal accessories?

Details have been and continue to be really important, so an heirloom piece of jewellery incorporated into a brides accessories is still really hot. I just did a garter with a heart shaped locket that belonged to the brides grandmother. It had a tiny picture of both grandparents in there so she felt she could have them there on the day. So lovely and meaningful

What about future trends, what is going to be popular in the future?

There has been a lot of talk about the vintage trend dying out in the industry. To me the vintage trend is mostly about nostalgia, isn’t that natural on your wedding day? People shouldn’t be criticised for that. It brings out all kinds of emotions in people. I do think that this will remain key but we may see a shift away from the more kitsch garden-party type vintage towards a cleaner look. Lace will be important thanks to Kate Middleton, which I am really pleased about! Veils are going to be popular too which can in turn mean brides want something less elaborate to wear in their hair for their evening do.

Bridal Accessories, Bridal Hair Accessory, Vintage Bridal Accessories, Silver Sixpence in Her Shoe, Manchester Bridal Supplier, Vintage Veils, Vintage Headpieces, Bridal Garter, Lace Garter, Bridal Shoe Clips, Fascinator making workshops (1)

Which bride (past, present or future) would be your dream bride to wear one of your designs?

That is a tough question as I admire so many stylish women but I think I have to be a bit cheesy and say Audrey Hepburn. Can I have Alexa Chung too please?

Who would you love to work/collaborate with and why? Do you have any plans to make this happen?

Great question! 2011 was a year of collaborations for me both on the bridal accessories and the private parties front. I adore working this way and I want to thank all those people be it photographers, bloggers, florists or stockists that have supported me. It is a fantastic industry to network in and the best way to further your business. I would love to work with a fab dress label of course to design a collection for them so if anyone is out there that wants to get in touch feel free!

Bridal Accessories, Bridal Hair Accessory, Vintage Bridal Accessories, Silver Sixpence in Her Shoe, Manchester Bridal Supplier, Vintage Veils, Vintage Headpieces, Bridal Garter, Lace Garter, Bridal Shoe Clips, Fascinator making workshops (3)

Can you share with us a sneak-peak exclusive of future plans for your business / goals for this year?

The parties are really set in place for this year so I will be looking to develop these further with new ideas. There are some photoshoots planned and really I will be furthering my bridal brand, I hope. A new collection will be on the horizon….

When you are not crafting and creating what are you doing?

Well mostly being a mum which is my real full-time job. I spend most of my free time with yoghurt in my hair and at toddler groups singing silly songs! I also love to relax with a film (usually whilst sewing!) and to potter round vintage markets.

What is your ultimate dream in life?

I honestly don’t have one. I don’t go in for that looking to the future and where you will be in 10 years time, always wanting more philosophy. I think you have to live in the now with your eyes open or you can forget how lucky you are. Things evolve.

Dream Team: Welcoming Lottie Designs Wedding Photography

My newest addition to the Pocketful of Dreams Dream Team is Lottie Designs, hailing from Lancashire, and offering Wedding Photography in the North West. I was so absolutely thrilled when I first connected with Charlotte (Lottie), as not only is she local, she is practically right on my doorstep. It is so wonderful to meet other local creative businesses and even better when they evidently share the same level of passion and enthusiasm for this industry as I do. Lottie is one of those people and she is really lovely to boot.

Here’s what she had to say when we recently caught up over a cuppa…“Well I’m in my 30′s (not being too exact with numbers for reasons of vanity) and I’m an incurable romantic, I just absolutely love shooting weddings. Sometimes I can get so wrapped up in events I have been known to cry. I’m always learning too and I’m inspired by creative people, which means I am a serial wedding blog surfer and always collecting images for inspiration.

My approach is very laid back, I’d rather observe and document rather than direct and engineer. I have a quirky sense of humour and always try to make clients feel at ease with the process as most of my clients come to me dreading being the centre of attention. I like to make you feel like your day is easier to cope with, less stressful and smooth-running, and of course resulting in beautiful images even better than you dreamed imaginable”.

Lottie Designs (1)

How did you get into photography and why did you become a wedding photographer?

Purely by chance. I’d been an amateur shooter for 15 years, I bought my first DSLR and thought I could take on the world. My partner and I were asked to shoot a friend’s wedding, he hated the experience, I loved it. I’d been a designer (web and graphics) for 12 years in my day job, but I was able to be more creative with a camera than I had ever been as a designer. I was then made redundant, got a nice good-bye payout, set up LottieDesigns (web design/graphic design/photography) started shooting semi-pro, then went fully pro about 12 months later.

Lottie Designs (3)

Who / what inspires you?

My clients do. Sounds a cliché, but when they get me, we bounce ideas off each other and come up with something amazing and the images reflect that. I love to surf and soak up ideas, styles, lighting techniques from all kinds of photography sites, not just weddings. All these images are held in my subconscious and on a wedding day they inspire me to create better imagery and better usage of available light.

Lottie Designs (6)

Do you have a particular photography style and can you describe it for us?

My style is creative, fine art wedding photography for couples who love life and each other.

What is the most challenging thing about photographing weddings?

Two things, our British weather and lack of light in winter and secondly educating drivers, MC’s, venues, DJ’s and vicars that all photographers are not the same!

and the best part of it?

What advice would you give to couples when choosing a wedding photographer? What should a couple be asking their photographer?

I always say to couples that if you don’t like the personality of the photographer, don’t book. It’s such a crucial decision to make. Even if their work is amazing but they annoy you, this annoyance will multiply 1000 fold with the stress of the day. NB – avoid photographers with whistles!

How do you ensure the images you capture are what the couple wants from their day?

By listening. I always have at least two meetings with the bride and groom, talking and listening to their needs. Most of my clients already know my style before they meet me, so after the booking I talk them through the day, timings etc and we discuss how and when we will achieve what they want from me. I ask them to imagine waking up the next day having forgotten to take a shot with Auntie Nora, should we have a list of “must-have” images?

What are your thoughts on the wedding industry and how has it changed / how will it change in the future?

It’s amazing right now, the changes that have happened since I started in 2005 are mind blowing and this industry keeps going from strength to strength. Finally being a wedding photographer is being seen as a craft and I love it!

Whose wedding (past, present or future) would be your dream wedding to photograph?

Anyone that is truly in love. It could be a two hour weekday wedding on a budget or a lavish big-budget shindig in August, as long as I can see the love, I’m happy.

Who would you love to work/collaborate with and why? Do you have any plans to make this happen?

I already work closely with other wedding vendors, like florists and dress shops, and intend to do more of that this year. I would like to try and get some real wedding images published too. Watch this space.

Can you share with us a sneak-peak exclusive of future plans for your business / goals for this year?

I’ve recently started a new Boudoir Photography arm to the business and I’m going to create wedding photography packages for the Autumn including a Boudoir shoot for Brides to give to their grooms as a wedding present. Or first Anniversary gift.

When you are not photographing weddings what are you doing?

I’m a commercial photographer too and shoot for a few glossy mags. Other than that I’m walking the dogs!

What is your ultimate dream in life?

To be a full time wedding photographer with a camper van! Simple but true………. Oh and I’d like a Canon 1D x please.
