Dream Team: Welcoming Corrine Smith Design ~ Bridal Accessories

Good morning folks,

Today I am so pleased to be able to introduce you to another superb Dream Team member ~ Corrine Smith Design, specialists in creating award winning bridal accessories and offering an unrivalled collection of handcrafted wedding tiaras, wedding headbands, wedding hair accessories, vintage tiaras and wedding jewellery to customers from their gorgeous boutique in Kilmarnock, Scotland. They also supply their beautiful ranges to brides, bridesmaids, mother of the bride/groom and wedding guests across the UK from their online store at www.corrinesmith.com.

I have actually been lucky enough to wear one of the amazing headpieces from the Corrine Smith Design collection, you may remember my little trip to a certain soiree not so long ago, well I got to wear a gorgeous creation called the Ophelia and I must say ~ I felt like a million dollars all night in my sparkly headpiece.

The lovely Corrine told me all about her exclusive accessories boutique….“I live in Ayrshire, Scotland with my husband and 5 year old son. I am a bridal accessories designer and I love my job!

Ever since I was a little girl I have been fascinated by the creative process and have always loved making things. At school I was encouraged to follow a more academic path and studied European Business Law at University. I always knew that I would follow my heart and end up where I am now. I set up my business on a part time basis in 2004 and over the next few years worked every spare minute building my reputation within the wedding industry. In 2010 I gave up my day job to run my business full time and opened my first boutique. This is probably the best decision I have ever made and my business has continued to grow and exceed all of my expectations. I have just recently moved into a much bigger and better premises complete with luxurious showroom, office, workroom and consultation room.

Do you have a particular style and can you describe it for us?

I don’t like to categorize my designs as belonging to a particular style. Being a creative person I am always exploring new ideas, styles and techniques. I love vintage and contemporary designs in equal measure and love to incorporate elements of both into my designs. One common theme throughout all of my work is the application of meticulous attention to detail and the use of the highest quality materials.

What / who inspires your designs?

I draw inspiration from so many different places, but my biggest inspiration undoubtedly comes from the brides that I work so closely with on a daily basis. Most of the designs in my current collections are heavily influenced by the hundreds of bespoke designs I have created for brides over the years.

What makes your products unique?

Each and every piece that leaves my studio has been made with love by myself especially for the wearer, which means that customizing an existing design is always a possibility. I think there is something really special about having a piece made for you, rather than buying an off the shelf headdress that may have been tried on countless times before. I am dedicated to providing my clients with quality products and I am also very passionate about offering excellent service on all levels and I am extremely proud of the fact that I have won the ‘Best Bridal Accessories’ category at the www.vowsawards.co.uk consecutively for the last 4 years.

What is currently hot in the world of bridal accessories?

At the moment I am seeing a move away from structured designs and an increasing demand for feminine delicate pieces with a slightly organic feel. Bohemian style headdresses and browbands are also very popular just now. Headwear that can be worn again and again after the wedding day is always a great investment and this is always something I discuss with my brides at consultations.

What about future trends, what is going to be popular in the future?

The trends in bridal accessories are very much influenced by the upcoming collections by bridal dress designers, and whilst the vintage trend is set to stay around a little longer I have seen the emergence of lots of classically cut bridal gowns with a contemporary edge and I’m really looking forward to creating some new pieces and getting started on my next collection.

Which bride (past, present or future) would be your dream bride to wear one of your designs?

I know it probably sounds a bit corny but I have a fantastic time working with all of my brides and if it wasn’t for my clients I wouldn’t be able to do what I love. Having said that I’m pretty excited about designing accessories for my 3 gorgeous nieces when the time comes for them to get married.

Who would you love to work/collaborate with and why? Do you have any plans to make this happen?

I would love to collaborate with a dress designer and design a range of headdresses to compliment a collection of couture gowns. This is something that could be happening later this year but I don’t want to give too much away just yet, so as they say…..watch this space!

Can you share with us a sneak-peak exclusive of future plans for your business / goals for this year?

For quite some time it has been an ambition of mine to make my designs available to a group of exclusive stockists throughout the UK and further afield. Ideally bridal boutiques would stock sample designs and order from me when a bride orders from them which means that I can stick to my principles and still create a piece especially for an individual bride. This is another exciting development for my business and I am totally committed to continuing to provide first class service and beautiful products to my stockists and individual clients alike.

When you are not crafting and creating what are you doing?

When I’m not crafting and creating I’m usually thinking about crafting and creating. What I do is my passion and it can be very difficult to switch off completely. I love to spend time with my family though and Sundays are dedicated to getting out and having fun.

What is your ultimate dream in life?

For years my dream was to be in the position I am now, being able to do what I love as my job. I am extremely proud of what I have achieved so far and I’m pretty excited about where the rest of my journey is going to take me. As far as I am concerned I have the best job in the world and I am so very grateful for that.

Silver Sixpence explores why the garter is your Valentines must have accessory for 2012

If you’re a regular follower of the Pocketful of Dreams blog you will know how much I love Nicola of Silver Sixpence in her Shoe, a vintage-inspired, bespoke, bridal accessories designer based in South Manchester. Who is also a member of my Dream Team.

Well today folks Nicola wants to talk about that long-lost accessory that love forgot, until now, The Garter. And she is offering readers a very special offer for orders received before Valentines Day….

Bridal Accessories, Etsy, Garter, Silver Sixpence in Her Shoe, valentines, Vintage Inspired, wedding accessories (1)

“Valentines 2012 is the year to dress your pins in one of Silver Sixpence’s beautiful, bespoke garters handcrafted in luxury fabrics such as antique lace and silk dupion and are perfectly finished with a one-off jewel.

Bridal Accessories, Etsy, Garter, Silver Sixpence in Her Shoe, valentines, Vintage Inspired, wedding accessories (3)

Subtle but sexy, the garter originates back to the 18th century in which grooms would remove their bride’s garter using their teeth and toss into a crowd of unmarried men. The tradition was meant to bring good luck, similar to the tradition of brides tossing their bouquet, which is not nearly half as sexy! In the later years of the 1930’s and 40’s garters merged into fashion and were used by women to carry their small valuables such as cigarettes, petite eau de perfumes and lipsticks. A tradition I wish still existed, sounds very French!

For this year’s February 14th, why not go the whole Shabang! and accompany your matching undies with a little lace love for your leg?”

Dream Team: Welcoming Britten {Timeless Bridal Accessories ~ Made in the UK}

Good afternoon,

And just how is your middle of the week going? I have to say mine is panning out rather well, I’ve had several pieces of great and also rather unexpected news this week which have made me very happy indeed. I think it is so true that the more you have a positive outlook on life, the more positive opportunities come your way. My mantra recently has been “positive thoughts bring positive things”. So far it’s working and 2012 is proving to be a year full of opportunity, after a few years which have been rather hard and draining, it’s such a nice place to be in. Long may it continue.

And the latest addition to my Dream team certainly knows a thing or two about seizing opportunities. Sarah Jane Bates has created a successful online boutique, Britten, full of original wedding accessories, ranging from peacock feather fans, to garters, to hair combs to feather buttonholes. Sarah told me all about the ethos behind Britten…..

How did you get into this type of work?

I have been designing accessories since I was little. After studying accessory design at Cordwainers College (LCF) I set up my own online business focusing on handmade handbags and accessories. When my husband and I got married in November 2010 (best.day.ever) our wedding was loosely based on 1920s. We wanted to use peacock feathers in the bouquets. At first my bouquet was going to be a combination of flowers and feathers, this would have been beautiful but I wanted to carry something down the aisle that I could keep forever. Inspired by old photographs of the twenties I came up with peacock feather fans. There were so many lovely comments about the fans that I decided to add a wedding range to my boutique.

Do you have a particular style and can you describe it for us?

I am inspired by everything from 1920’s to 1950’s and this is reflected in my work.

Bridal Accessories, Bridal Garter, Bridal Hair Accessory, bridal hair combs, Bridal Shoe Clips, Britten, Britten bags, feather buttonholes, Lace Garter, Made in the UK, Timeless wedding accessories. Peacock feather fans, Vintage Bridal Accessories, Vintage Headpieces, Vintage Veils (11)

What / who inspires your designs?

I’m always trying to recreate that feeling of timeless old world glamour, I love looking at old photographs. But nothing inspires me more than surrounding myself with beautiful materials. I shut myself in my studio and get out my box of treasures- feathers, pearls, ribbon, lace, beads and everything in between and I’m lost for hours.

What makes your products unique?

I’m a big fan of individuality and hate mass produced items. I make everything myself in my little studio outside Bath. I try to create timeless pieces rather than follow trends.

What is currently hot in the world of bridal accessories?

Fans, brooch bouquets, hairpieces, headbands, feathers, birdcage veils, juliet veils, I could go on forever, there is such an amazing range of accessories on offer to brides at the moment. Which is great as I think it is important to find a piece you really love rather than just go with what is currently ‘hot.’

What about future trends, what is going to be popular in the future?

I take trends (particularly wedding trends) with a pinch of salt, I encourage my brides and grooms to go for timeless pieces.  If you are in love with a particular trend then great, go with it- make it work for you. Don’t just go for bunting and cupcakes (which I happen to love) because it’s a big trend right now if it’s not you.

Which bride (past, present or future) would be your dream bride to wear one of your designs?

Gemma Arterton, (my girl crush) I think she is beautiful and the perfect English rose.

Who would you love to work/collaborate with and why? Do you have any plans to make this happen?

There are so many people I admire, I couldn’t possibly list them all! I’m just finding my feet in this amazing industry. I haven’t collaborated with anyone yet but it is certainly on the cards for 2012!

Can you share with us a sneak-peak exclusive of future plans for your business / goals for this year?

It is still very early days for Britten and I’m exhibiting at my first fairs over the next few months. I’m also working on a new range to include vintage inspired bridal bags which I hope to introduce at the fairs.

When you are not crafting and creating what are you doing?

Walking my crazy puppy, Alfie; relaxing with my lovely hubby; browsing flea markets and spending long lazy afternoons in pubs with friends.

What is your ultimate dream in life?

To stay as happy as I am now- super cheesy I know, sorry guys!

♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦

Ah that’s such a lovely sentiment from Sarah and I do agree spending a lazy afternoon with friends over a few glasses of your favourite tipple is definitely one of life’s great pleasures. It’s also great to hear from another inspiring creative lady about forging forward with a successful business.

I am very proud to have Britten-Bags as a member of my dream team. Please do check out their accessories and handbags, I am sure you will find something to fall in love with.

Dream Team: Welcoming Silver Sixpence in her Shoe {Vintage Bridal Accessories}

Today isn’t so much as a welcome to my Dream Team, but rather a big fat friendly hello again to the lovely Nicola of Silver Sixpence in her Shoe. Nicola was one of the very first people I met when I first dipped my toe into the wedding world and I have loved watching her business grow and grow. Nicola creates really lovely handmade bridal accessories for the modern yet vintage inspired bride. Everything is designed and custom-made in-house, from veils and headpieces, to garters and even shoe clips, you will always find something inspiring and gorgeous at Silver Sixpence.

We recently caught up and chatted all things wedding as I learnt more about the lady behind this truly unique and lovely business that is Silver Sixpence in her Shoe

“I live in South Manchester with my husband and 18 month old son. I love vintage, good design, clothes, weddings and general girliness! Too much stuff is badly designed and poorly made these days. People need to demand more and I am passionate about that, so Silver Sixpence in her Shoe aims to tackle it. My contemporary bridal accessories are designed in house and custom made using unique materials so you will receive something truly individual. I also run workshops and private parties alongside the collection where people can come along and have a go at learning how to craft their own accessories. Perfect for the modern DIY bride!”

How did you get into this type of work?

Pure and simple, the cliché of my own wedding day. I spent years as a fashion buyer prior to doing this. I wanted a fashionable but well made and classic dress and I managed to find this but didn’t go down the route of traditional wedding dresses. Instead I opted for a silk chiffon evening dress. It all happened completely by accident but felt very serendipitous. Veils looked wrong with it- I loved birdcage veils but short of finding a damaged vintage one I wasn’t having a lot of luck. So I set to work making my own. I have always sewn since I was young and obviously as a fashion buyer I do have a background and a degree in fashion design. I used the off cuts from the dress alterations ( a service I always offer my brides to keep costs down and get that perfect match) It rolled from there and I ended up making my garter too alongside lots of our details for the day. People kept asking about my accessories and I started to make for others through recommendations. Within a few months I had quit my job and started doing this full time. 2011 has been crazy. I could never have dreamed this would have grown so quickly and I am so grateful to everyone who has supported me. The parties in particular have rocketed for me and I am very full already for 2012. I think people are really keen to learn new skills and put their own heart and soul into DIY touches for their wedding day.

Do you have a particular style and can you describe it for us?

Vintage inspired, modern and classic all at once. These things are so important on your big day as you don’t want to look back at photos in 20 years time and feel they look dated. The 2012 collection has been inspired by the discovery of a box of antique handmade laces. They have been lovingly restored, adorned with vintage pearls and sparkles and updated into contemporary pieces that every bride will love. This sort of sums up my style really. Something old into something new….

Bridal Accessories, Bridal Hair Accessory, Vintage Bridal Accessories, Silver Sixpence in Her Shoe, Manchester Bridal Supplier, Vintage Veils, Vintage Headpieces, Bridal Garter, Lace Garter, Bridal Shoe Clips, Fascinator making workshops (2)

What / who inspires your designs?

Absolutely 100% it is my materials for the seasonal collections. I am always scouring 2nd hand shops and vintage fairs for inspiration. Of course wedding and fashion trends are important too, they influence our choices more than any of us realise but I think it is very important to work with a bride on her individual style needs. So when I am working on a bespoke piece the bride is my biggest inspiration.

What makes your products unique?

I love the traditions that surround a wedding day and I love to keep these alive through thoughtful little touches in my work. There will always be something blue in your garter, even if it just a single blue pearl. These pieces are the heirlooms of the future that can be passed to your daughters so I love to make things that are timeless. The business name gives a big nod to that traditional wedding day rhyme. All my brides receive a special secret gift for their day in relation to this, from me.

Bridal Accessories, Bridal Hair Accessory, Vintage Bridal Accessories, Silver Sixpence in Her Shoe, Manchester Bridal Supplier, Vintage Veils, Vintage Headpieces, Bridal Garter, Lace Garter, Bridal Shoe Clips, Fascinator making workshops (5)

What is currently hot in the world of bridal accessories?

Details have been and continue to be really important, so an heirloom piece of jewellery incorporated into a brides accessories is still really hot. I just did a garter with a heart shaped locket that belonged to the brides grandmother. It had a tiny picture of both grandparents in there so she felt she could have them there on the day. So lovely and meaningful

What about future trends, what is going to be popular in the future?

There has been a lot of talk about the vintage trend dying out in the industry. To me the vintage trend is mostly about nostalgia, isn’t that natural on your wedding day? People shouldn’t be criticised for that. It brings out all kinds of emotions in people. I do think that this will remain key but we may see a shift away from the more kitsch garden-party type vintage towards a cleaner look. Lace will be important thanks to Kate Middleton, which I am really pleased about! Veils are going to be popular too which can in turn mean brides want something less elaborate to wear in their hair for their evening do.

Which bride (past, present or future) would be your dream bride to wear one of your designs?

That is a tough question as I admire so many stylish women but I think I have to be a bit cheesy and say Audrey Hepburn. Can I have Alexa Chung too please?

Who would you love to work/collaborate with and why? Do you have any plans to make this happen?

Great question! 2011 was a year of collaborations for me both on the bridal accessories and the private parties front. I adore working this way and I want to thank all those people be it photographers, bloggers, florists or stockists that have supported me. It is a fantastic industry to network in and the best way to further your business. I would love to work with a fab dress label of course to design a collection for them so if anyone is out there that wants to get in touch feel free!

Bridal Accessories, Bridal Hair Accessory, Vintage Bridal Accessories, Silver Sixpence in Her Shoe, Manchester Bridal Supplier, Vintage Veils, Vintage Headpieces, Bridal Garter, Lace Garter, Bridal Shoe Clips, Fascinator making workshops (3)

Can you share with us a sneak-peak exclusive of future plans for your business / goals for this year?

The parties are really set in place for this year so I will be looking to develop these further with new ideas. There are some photoshoots planned and really I will be furthering my bridal brand, I hope. A new collection will be on the horizon….

When you are not crafting and creating what are you doing?

Well mostly being a mum which is my real full-time job. I spend most of my free time with yoghurt in my hair and at toddler groups singing silly songs! I also love to relax with a film (usually whilst sewing!) and to potter round vintage markets.

What is your ultimate dream in life?

I honestly don’t have one. I don’t go in for that looking to the future and where you will be in 10 years time, always wanting more philosophy. I think you have to live in the now with your eyes open or you can forget how lucky you are. Things evolve.
