British Bloggers in Support of British Flowers ~ Will you support the campaign?

Today folks I have something rather different to share with you. If you’re a regular to Pocketful of Dreams you will know I have something of an obsession with flowers. But whilst I appreciate their beautiful aesthetics I know very little about flower types, origins and how to grow them myself. So it’s just as well that I have a few rather talented friends who do know a thing or two about blooms.

One such friend is Kat Weatherill who owns a gorgeous little flower boutique in Barrowford, Lancashire, Kat cut her teeth in garden design and really does know her hyacinths from her hydrangeas. She is taking part in the ‘British Bloggers in Support of British Flowers’ campaign and bonus points for us will be sharing her journey right here on Pocketful of Dreams as she attempts to raise awareness and support for British Flowers and their growers.

I am positive this will be an exciting journey and I’m really looking forward to hearing all about it, here’s Kat to tell you a little more…..

{Gorgeous British grown Dahlia’s, Delphiniums, Mollucella

“I love flowers, I am a ‘plantaholic’, I garden and I believe strongly in supporting ‘Buy British’ and your local businesses. So imagine my delight when  Vanessa Kimbell, broadcaster and British Blogger of Goddess On A Budget tweeted about a campaign she is spear heading ‘British Bloggers in Support of British Flowers’. It sent me running to get my soap box (actually a vintage British bushel crate!) and my lap top.

{British Anemones and Prunus in a simple hand-tied bouquet,
grown and created by Green and Gorgeous in Oxfordshire}

The challenge is to help raise awareness and support for British Flower Growers and British Flowers. There has already been a shift in the way we think regarding fresh food, in the supermarket now we try to buy seasonal, with more local and organic produce available. There are more people growing their own veggies, (even if its only a few tomatoes and a herb box, it’s a start!) and allotments becoming more popular again.

Now its the time to think about the flowers, when you put a bunch in your shopping trolley, do you look at the label? Do you wonder how the florist includes peonies in your bouquet in January? No? Maybe its time to.

{Gorgeous Roses & native flower arrangements at an RHS show
by The Traditional Flower Company grown in Staffordshire.}

Many of the flowers we see in the supermarkets and florists have flown thousands miles from halfway round the world, often the flower farms do not follow the ‘Fair Trade’ policy and the workers are exploited. They are mass producing flowers to meet demand, but lets do our bit to reduce the ‘Flower Miles’, enjoy and celebrate the beautiful seasonality of British Flowers, red roses for valentines? I know personally I’d rather have a bunch of white scented British Hyanciths and Hellebores.

{How Handsome! Beautiful British Hellebores
from Green and Gorgeous Flowers}

One of my favourite sayings when dealing with a problem is “How do you eat an Elephant? – One bite at a time!”

So how do we begin this Flower Revolution? Vanessa Kimbell has taken the first bite for us:

“I am starting a campaign to ask that we foodies apply the same principles to flowers as we do to our food and support local, sustainable, seasonal and British. We’ve had a revolution in the way in which we source and buy our food .. it’s time we applied the same logic to flowers.

Think of the impact we foodies could have if we apply the same standards to flowers.  We’d revolutionize the way people think about flowers.

There are lots of ways we can create change but to start with  ..
~ Look out for British flowers in the Supermarket.
~ Support our flower growers and buy from florist who stock local British flowers.
~ Look out for local growers at the farmers markets and farm shops.
~ Ask for British Flowers wherever you go.

~ Grow your own..  it doesn’t get more local that!”

{Beautiful, simple and effective jam jars filled with flowers
from Common Farm Flowers}

I will aim to assist you as much as I can over the next few months, with further blog posts about this worthy campaign. I will also create a list of British Flower Growers (and their Blogs) as I discover more (including those that deliver nationally) and hopefully advise you on “growing your own”, it doesn’t have to be scary, or a huge task, a simple pot of daisy like Cosmos to cheer your day, or a few sweet peas to bring scent, pleasure and beauty to your home. But if you have a little room to spare what would bring more joy than your own small cutting garden?

{Sweet peas and cornflowers at the farm of Green and Gorgeous flowers}

Meanwhile to further my support, part of the challenge set by Vanessa Kimbell to kickstart British Bloggers in Support of British Flowers Campaignis for 30 British food & lifestyle Bloggers to grow our own posy of flowers and share this journey with you, with the grand unveiling of the bouquet by 15th August this year. This has been facilitated by the lovely people at Thompson and Morgan, who are generously donating the seeds to us bloggers. I received mine in the post recently, Cosmos ‘All Sorts, Cosmos Double Click ‘Rose BonBon’, Zinnia ‘Candy Cane’, so its going to be a ‘blooming’ gorgeous summer!

I hope you enjoy this flowery journey with me. Have a beautiful day.

You can keep in touch with Kat between blog posts on Facebook and Twitter. And of course do pop by her blog Tea on The Terrace and online shop.
This is such an exciting initiative and one I am delighted to be following and of course sharing with all my readers. Do let me know your thoughts on locally sourced flowers, is this something you think about when selecting your blooms, is it something you will think about in the future. And how about growing your own, will you be having a go?

Dream Idea: Illustrative Moments ~ Bridal Fashion Illustration

Good morning folks,

And how are we today?

I wanted to introduce you to this brilliant new concept called Illustrative Moments from across the pond in the USA as I just love it, creating your own work of art by having an original fashion illustration created of you in your gown, perfectly capturing the very essence of elegance and beauty.

Illustrative Moments, Bridal Fashion, Fashion Illustration, Bridal Keepsake, Wedding Keepsake, Anniversary Gift, Paper Anniversary Idea (1)

Creator of  Illustrative Moments Debi told me more….“After 13 years of working in couture bridal and sketching for clients and bridal publications I have decided to make this modern keepsake available to every bride.

Illustrative Moments takes a fashionable memory and turns it into a timeless piece of art and the new go-to gift even more so the ULTIMATE first anniversary gift of paper. Perfect for any occasion- Bridal shower, Wedding, Anniversary, Valentines, Birthday, Christmas, or just because. I have even had requests for bridal party and mother of the bride portraits as well which makes for a very thoughtful gift from the bride. If it is a gift given before the big day I have been successful in working with tear sheets of the wedding gown and pictures of the bride to-be with notes on hair styles and jewellery since most brides cannot keep their big day glam a secret from their friends. Gift Certificates are also available as well as optional custom work such as illustrations for paper goods etc.

The illustration is rendered in a high fashion style that will take on characteristics such as hair color/style and jewelry but is not meant to be an exact portrait. The chosen pose is decided by the dress and all highlighted details creating a flattering composition.

Each piece is done with much attention to detail and is created in colored pencil, colored marker, ink, and metallic pens and placed in a silk white mat with backer board ready to frame inside a clear sleeve”.

We all love a photobooth don’t we? and video booths are also becoming ever more popular at weddings and events too.

But as they become more popular, and dare I say it ‘mainstream’ how do you keep the idea kitsch and quirky?

Here’s one way, turn your video booth into a confessional and invite your guests to “confess their sins”, that should make for some interesting footage come the ‘day after the night before’!!

Cool Idea: Customised Wedding Cake Topper

Man I LOVE this, just the right side of cool and quirky for me. Designed by Sylvia Weinstock, a New York based cake-maker and somewhat legend in the wedding industry. It not only features the happy couple but their whole family, including pet dog.

The beauty of it is, they get to keep the topper encased in a shadowbox for all eternity as a sentimental, if rather unusual piece of home decor!

J’adore.

Guest Post: Welcoming Wedding Sparrow to Pocketful of Dreams

Rain on your wedding day, wedding planning, Guest Blogger Wedding Sparrow, Umbrellas (6)

Well today boys and girls I have a very special guest blogger joining me with a rather timely post, given our fluctuating weather. It is really the one thing we can rely on as the summer draws to a close in the UK, we’re bound to have horrid weather. But as you’ll see it’s not all doom and gloom. I wrote a post a little while back about how to prepare for rainy weather which you can see here, or now here’s Sara from the blog Wedding Sparrow to tell you how to make those grey days a little brighter.

♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦

Hey everyone and welcome to Wedding Sparrow’s guest post while Michelle takes a well earned break! For those of you who don’t know Wedding Sparrow, let me tell you a little bit about me. Like many of you, I am a bride-to-be currently in the midst of crazy wedding planning going through endless mood boards and sourcing suppliers. It’s been a whirlwind of ups, downs and everything in between so far and with 7 months to go until the big day, I’m sure the time will fly by.

With the weather recently turning a little dismal and kissing the summer goodbye for another year, I have been researching hints and tips on how best to deal with what the glorious British weather throws at you. I will be walking a very short walk from the hotel where I am getting ready to my ceremony venue and I dread waking up to a freak monsoon or hurricane type weather on the big day. I’m getting married in May next year so I highly doubt the weather will be more than a little drizzle at worst. Still, the thought of getting rain and mud on my long white train and white shoes gives me sleepless nights. Since we can’t control the weather, the best we can do is look stylish protecting ourselves from it…

Wake up to a dark grey sky and worried about your photographs? Judging by the above images it stops nothing and only adds a lot of drama to the shot. You don’t have to stick to your dad’s golf umbrella either as the below images show…

They can make a great feature on the day and hopefully you can look back on your wedding photos and laugh about jumping over puddles. You can pick up umbrellas all over the internet and high street so there is no excuse not to be prepared! Here are some fine examples:

I for one will be preparing myself for the worst and hoping for the best! A huge thanks to Michelle for letting me guest feature. You can follow the sparrow on twitter @weddingsparrow so feel free to pop over and say hi and let me know about your weather dramas!

Wishing you sunny wedding days…

Much love.

Inspiration: Beautiful Bouquet, white blue and green

It’s so lovely getting to look at flowers all day long, but I will admit I’m certainly no floral connoisseur. I would love to be, to know all the different varieties and how to create amazing displays…so I am determined to learn this art and will be enrolling myself in flower school very soon.

And for that reason you’ll be finding a lot more floral inspiration heading your way, and why not everyone loves looking at pretty flowers don’t they?

These ones are exactly that, in delicate white with blue and green. Who knew you could get blue in a bouquet?

On that note, if you know of any great flower courses taking place in the North West then do let me know as I really want to feed my creative brain with something gorgeous like this. Or perhaps some of you wonderful flower experts fancy spending a day with me and showing me the delights of what you do, I promise to bring cake and make you lashings of tea all day long. Seriously if anyone is interested in me being a tag-along then please drop me an email michelle{at}pocketfulofdreams{dot}co{dot}uk

Much love and happy Friday peeps.

Inspiration: A Seaside Themed Dessert Table by Tempting Cakes

Are you ready for some more divine cake and sweet-stuff inspiration? Honestly I cannot be held responsible for the inevitable dash for the sweetie cupboard that is sure to ensue after you read this post.

I welcome back Emily from Tempting Cake who is sharing the details behind this gorgeous seaside themed dessert table:

The client briefed us to create a seaside themed Tempting Table.  There is rich territory here for some cracking ideas, and they settled on a soft colour palette of sandy creams with accents of nature’s riches: sea greens and coral pinks.  The images below feature a scaled down version of the actual Tempting Table, in order that super snapper Liesl Cheney could capture the details for you all to enjoy.

The Tempting Table was set on a wooden table with a linen table cloth and accessorised with two huge glass and chrome hurricane lamps to complement the outdoorsy theme.

We created some seaside cupcakes, featuring hand-made beach details including star fish, sea shells, oyster shell complete with sugar pearl and piped coral detail:

Flaked almond gives the impression of crushed sea shells and these mini cakes are topped with fresh home-grown raspberries (an in-season fruit) for a dash of colour:

We always try to use in season fayre in our Tempting Tables, so this non-alcoholic cocktail uses fresh peach juice with a dash of cranberry juice.  The glasses were frosted with sugar and accessorised with a sugar-soaked apple star.  The ice cubes contain mint leaves for added refreshment.

You’ve seen and tried brownies, well these are their blonder cousins.  Cut into triangles, they resemble a flotilla of ship sails bobbing up and down on the Japanese inspired wave graphics.

Melons are another fruit in season this month and the melon baller is used to create a caviar effect:

The Turkish delight in the foreground of the above shot was included for its similarity in texture and colour to anemones.

Physallis fruit – hard to pronounce.  Harder still to spell.  Delicious to eat.  And their leaves look nice and earthy.

The ridged Madeleine tins inspired this platter, as they resemble clam shells.  Sandwiched with a pistachio and lime filling.

And of course it wouldn’t be a seaside break without an ice cream cone.  These are our cupcake cones, featuring cupcake sponge soaked in syrup inside the cupcake cone, topped with buttercream icing in a variety of flavours.

The Tempting Table also featured pearl drops wrapped in binker fabric (favourite of young children learning to sew for its chunky texture),  fastened with sea blue and gold ribbons.  They were displayed in metallic beach pails to continue the seaside theme.  At the centre of the table was a two tier ice cream cake, with icing roughly sculpted to look like waves.

Ohhhh. Emmmm. Geeeeee. This is quite simply amazing, the amount of thought and detail that has gone into creating this dessert table is phenomenal. This is the kind of thing your guests will talk about for months, heck years after. Incredible.

Dream Idea: Burlap Cone Flower or Confetti Holder

These burlap cones are actually available to buy on Etsy from gypsyskies, originally made to hold flowers or for the flowergirls to carry to scatter their petals down the aisle.

I just love the idea and think they would make great confetti cones too, but obviously a little smaller.

Dream Idea: Dessert Drinks Bar

I totally love the idea of having a drinks and dessert bar at a wedding. Particularly for the more intimate ones where guests are sitting around mingling and chatting rather than bopping away at the standard disco after the wedding breakfast.

As you know I’m a fan of mixing Tipples and Treats and I think this would make a perfect addition to my bar. I love the styling of this, it’s so clean and crisp, you could create something similar with beautiful, uniformed labels and lots of clear liqueurs.
