Floritecture ~ the architecture of a wedding bouquet by Blossom Flowers

Last week I introduced you to a new feature called Floritecture where I will be demonstrating the architecture behind a flower arrangement. Working with some of the UK’s most talented florists this feature aims to inspire you with creative floral arrangements whilst also talking about the why’s and how’s behind the arrangements.

Today’s has been brought to you by Becky Hay of Blossom Flowers and this one was actually created for a photoshoot I recently co-ordinated. Becky responded to my brief for the Industrial Eclectic shoot and came up with not just one but several stunning floral masterpieces.

I asked for textural, organic arrangements that would fit with the industrial vibe we had going on at the shoot, my only specification being they needed to be loose arrangements and fit into the muted colour scheme of industrial and soft greys, pale and dusky minks and pinks, with a hint of purple.

I can honestly say I was blown away when she arrived at the shoot in her flower van and did the grand unveiling. I think I may have even squealed a little when I saw the arrangements, and the bouquet, well it was a little piece of magic that everyone fell in love with on the day and I’m sure you will too….

~ Blossom has been recognised by Florist & Wholesale Buyer magazine to be included in the Good Florist Guide, and was awarded a Silver Award for Excellence in the 2007 Flower Shop of the Year Competition run by the Flower Council of Holland. Blossom is one of only 55 florists in the UK, and the only flower shop in Manchester to have achieved such status.

 Becky Hay is the owner and creative force behind Blossom. Since her very first job as a ‘Saturday girl’ in the local flower shop, her childhood ambition was to have her own shop. Before realising her dream, Becky trained and worked as a Landscape Architect which equipped her with excellent design skills and a wealth of horticultural knowledge.

  • Vanda orchid ‘Black Magic’
  • Rosa ‘Quick Sand’
  • Rosa ‘Nordia’
  • White cyclamen
  • Echeveria – a whole plant as well as individually wired leaves
  • Ranunculus ‘Cappuccino’
  • Coral fern (sprayed silver)

{why}

Becky of Blossom Flowers said: “The echeveria has qualities of an air plant but was a little softer in texture and colour. The roses, ranunculus, and cyclamen were all chosen for their colour as well as the ‘ruffle’ quality of their petals, while the orchid was chosen to be a more edgy and darker element. The coral fern was chosen for it’s structural form and sprayed silver to tie in with the shoot”

As always your feedback is really appreciated so please drop me a comment in the box below about this new feature and any particular arrangements you’d like the inside scoop on. Or if you are a creative florist and have something to submit for the feature then get in touch now.

Have a lovely day.

Bridal Inspiration ~ A Lavender Haze

Good morning folks,

As you read this I am having a much needed lie-in after my whirlwind tour of Paris. What an amazing City, I really cannot wait to tell you all about this once-in-a lifetime girly adventure I’ve just had.

Later I’ll be busy packing for the next stop on my magical mystery tour around Europe. Well it’s not really a tour as there’s only two stops, and there’s no really mystery as I know where I’m heading. But it sounds good, right?

I am actually off for a week of pure luxury just outside of Sorrento in Italy ~ I cannot wait for sun, sea, sand and plenty of…… limoncello! Of course.

For now I thought you might like a pretty mood board to stare at. Here you go then….

Combining my two favourite shades right now, lavender and pale green.

New feature: Floritecture ~ the architecture of flowers with Leafy Couture

Anyone who is a regular reader of Pocketful of Dreams will know of my love for all things flower-related.

Whilst I appreciate the aesthetic values of a fab flower arrangement I must admit I know very little about how to put them together, the different varieties of flowers there are (and trust me there’s a lot) and what works well with what. And I know I’m not alone in wanting to learn more about the art of flower arranging.

So in my quest to learn more I have hooked up with a few experts in this field, florists who really know what they are talking about and have caught my eye with their flair and creativity. Together we have developed a new feature for Pocketful of Dreams readers, called Floritecture.

The idea behind Floritecture (yes it is a made-up word) is to demonstrate the architecture behind a flower arrangement. What flowers were used in a particular arrangement and why they were used.

I am hoping that this new series will not only inspire you by showing some really creative and wonderful flower arrangements but also to help you, as well as me, learn a little bit more about flowers.

First up in the Floritecture series is this wonderfully vibrant bouquet by Leafy Couture. Combining decadent purple with sunny yellow, this is a really unusual combination that works so well together. The purple lissianthus and freesias provide plenty of rich colour and texture whilst the sunflowers and camomile (mini-daisies) add a retro, almost nostalgic feel and perfectly compliment the bridesmaids floral patterned dresses.

{what}

A bridal bouquet

{with}

Mini sunflowers, purple freesia, camomile, purple lissanthus and purple veronica

{why}

Sarah of Leafy Couture said: “The feel of the wedding was to be relaxed and informal, we chose mini sunflowers as they are happy and vibrant. The mini ones work very well in the bouquet when complimented by little textures. They are stunning by themselves but we added freesia for fragrance ( great for a nervous bride), we added camomile ( mini daisies) to add to the relaxed feel and also veronica as it is a spiky shape so adds another texture. The bouquet was finished with a purple ribbon to compliment the bridesmaids dresses. The flowers were for a late summer wedding and the sunflowers were perfect for this. They also looked so vibrant and worked with the 1950′s style bridesmaids dresses as the hand-tied complimented the shape of the dress”.

I do hope you’ve enjoyed this new column, as always your feedback is really appreciated so please drop me a comment in the box below. I’ve been working hard behind the scenes at Pocketful of Dreams to come up with new and inspiring content that you will enjoy reading so please, please do let me know if you’ve found this helpful and would like to see more like it.

Have a sunny day.

Bridal Inspiration Board: Dreaming of Dusk ~ Pink Hues {As featured on Love My Dress Blog}

Morning folks,

I have something of a confession to make, it’s not my usual style to bleet on about unhappy things as I am pretty sure you enter these white pages for an escape from the sometimes harsh realities of life. But I will admit that I am having a rather tough week.

Last weekend I managed and co-ordinated a destination wedding weekend for a client in Cornwall, it was an incredible weekend and so fulfilling seeing all those months of hard work, planning and designing all coming together. To see my lovely couple, who I’ve gotten to know so very well over the past few months, say their I-do’s in front of an intimate group of their nearest and dearest was just amazing.

I had however received some really terrible news on the morning of the wedding, news of a death is not the sort of news you ever want to receive. And when it is someone you love so very dearly who is telling you about them losing a parent then it is all the more heartbreaking and devastating. But I did what any professional would do under those circumstances ~ I put a smile on my face and I worked my socks off to make sure the day ran smoothly and was full of joy and happiness just like it should be.

Now I am back home I have a mountainous blog schedule to plough through as well as supporting someone through a very difficult time. With two of my European trips imminent, I have to plan ahead to fill these pages with pretty for you whilst I’m away. And this is where my confession comes in, my schedule has gone a little awry and may be somewhat erratic these next few weeks, I promise you will still be getting at least one post a day (during the week) so please do stick around and continue to visit and leave your comments, the blog has always been my safe haven and my escape, especially through life’s tougher times so it’s good to know you’re still there in the background pushing me on and keeping me motivated. I have lots of plans for Pocketful of Dreams blog, with exciting new features on the horizon so stay tuned folks ~ I will be back in full force in just a matter of weeks, and of course theirs the Paris and Italy trips to tell you all about.

And that is the end of the maudlin, let’s get back to fantasy pretty land and coo over some delicious images shall we?

This inspiration board featured on Love My Dress wedding blog last week, did you see it? I’ve gone all pink and pretty on you. Would love to know what you think.

And folks do pop back this afternoon for a rather special guest is featuring on Pocketful of Dreams, someone I have been itching to work with to bring you plenty of stylish inspiration, this lady is style-savvy yet keeps it totally real. She has recently helped me out with a fashion dilemma or two so I thought I’d share some of her fashion-forward insights with you a little later on.

Bridal Inspiration Board: Not Just Peachy {Peach and Mint}

Good morning folks,

Time for some more inspiration, this week my thoughts are turning to the sweetest sorbet shades of peach and mint. A colour combination I am loving right now, not just for weddings but fashion too.

  • How incredible is that bouquet above, photographed by Jose Villa? A real medley of gorgeous shades all in the same peachy and green colour family.
  • These delicate feather boutonnieres / buttonholes from Pomp and Plumage would add a really quirky touch
  • How about a straw hat and sundress for your bridesmaids, perfect for a picnic style wedding or one near the water
  • Wouldn’t it be cool to have your bar set-up for the evening in this vintage airstream trailer?
  • Serve peach baseed cocktails in vintage champagne-coupes and decorate with edible flowers for a special touch
  • And for dessert, dish up a mix of homemade peach and mint flavoured ice-creams served in cute little mason jars

  • This is a wonderful example of a beautifully styled dessert bar, sat atop a restored whitewashed dresser and adorned with a bunch of white balloons, the mint and peach delights awaiting your guests will look as sweet as they taste
  • And how about this cake? A very simple round tiered design is bolstered with the addition of coloured rope to bring out the peach and mint colours and decorated with a simple flower. Perfectly demonstrating how less fuss can often mean maximum style.

Hope you like my mint and peach inspiration.

Inspiration: A Vintage Easter Moodboard from Rowen and Wren

Good morning folks,

And how are we today on this beautiful Monday morning? I am most definitely full of the joys of Spring and so very much looking forward to the Easter break. 4 days to kick back, relax and unwind ~ bliss.

Some very exciting things have happened behind the scenes at Pocketful of Dreams these past weeks which I hope to share with you soon, I have also booked a few little breaks and an immense holiday. In the next few months I will be visiting Cornwall ~ for a client wedding, Paris for a girly weekend of shopping and sightseeing with my cousin and a week on the Sorrento coast, staying in pure luxury, where I plan to indulge in fabulous spa treatments, lounge and swim under the beating sun, and enjoy moutwatering food and delectable drinks.

Really I don’t mean to make anyone jealous but I cannot tell you how lucky I feel right now. Life in 2012 is being very good to me and I am the happiest I have been in such a long time, what a wonderful place to be in and long may it continue.

So with the impending Easter holidays in mind I will be talking this week about how to make the most of the break with lots of inspiration and ideas with an Easter-inspired twist.

First up we have a delightful mood board, this one has been created especially for Pocketful of Dreams by Lucy at Rowen and Wren. If you have yet to discover this treasure trove of homewares then please, I implore you to go take a look. I’ve bleated on before about my love for them and now with the launch of their Spring collection I have fallen even more in love.

This moodboard screams laid back sophistication with a muted colour palette and mix of textures, it is SO me. Over to you Lucy……

As soon as we see signs of Spring emerging, we can’t help but look forward to Easter, a guaranteed few days holiday that are made all the sweeter when enjoyed with family, friends and of course plenty of chocolate!

We enjoy dressing the home for Easter as much as we do for Christmas, just a few spring florals and some vintage accessories are all it takes to create a charming seasonal display.

Lay the table with vintage crockery and antique cutlery, add tulips, hyacinths and daffodils for your centrepiece, and decorative accents such as eggs, feathers or nests to your name places and you’ve got an idyllic setting to enjoy your Sunday roast.

Happy Easter everyone x

Lucy ~ Rowen and Wren

Thanks so much Lucy, so folks just how much are you loving this Easter inspiration?

  • A soft and floaty bridal gown would look delicious with a messy side plait, dewy makeup and a bold coral lip
  • Single stemmed blooms in the palest of yellows will brighten up any table, drop them into vintage milk bottles or jam jars for a laid-back burst of color
  • Dress your maids in pale and creamy shades of yellow for just a hint of spring colour
  • Create a quirky guestbook letter line, using twine and pegs. Provide your guests with yellow and green printed postcards and envelopes lined with pretty paper and ask them to share their words of wisdom with you for a long and happy marriage. Then pin their cards to the letter line.
  • Yellow socks and shoes ~ a genius way to add a splash of colour to your ensembles
  • Welcome guests to your reception with refreshing drinks that are tagged with their table numbers. Chilled mint lemonade would be perfect for a spring or summer occasion.
