Lookbook: Introducing Otaduy Spanish Bridalwear

Today I’d like to introduce to you an amazing Spanish bridalwear label Otaduy that I have recently stumbled upon. It’s one of those amazing discoveries that I’d love to keep to myself but feel compelled to share all at the same time.

Otaduy was born on a top-floor apartment on Keap Street, NYC one summer night with friends, music and photographs. The idea evolved until it finally took form in 2011. Taking its inspiration from moments like these snapshots and also from those little things in life that we all enjoy doing, such as “taking an espresso in a glass cup, wearing red lipstick to go to the cinema or riding a bike while listening to music on a mild spring night”.

The collections are designed to celebrate a special date or any date that deserves to be celebrated. The new collection; True Love is a collection based on, well: love. I just adore the sentiment of how they describe their collection here, this is what Pocketful of Dreams is all about…..

They say “We want to portray an abstract concept that knows no conditions, simply the union between self and your.

We appreciate the beauty of simplicity, the subtle. Take great care to details, that each piece is unique, what we consider fundamental characteristic of craftsmanship made with love and dedication.

It is a timeless collection, of pure lines and simple cuts. Consists of pieces inspired by the natural, for this we have used lightweight fabrics as silks and crêpe, that give it a slight air. In every detail, we transmit  some of us, of our rituals. The delicate embroidery in silver thread and old gold give it that vintage touch that reminiscent of the old black and white photos. And our Minerva dress, to the past of the nymphs in ancient Greece.

We designed collections to celebrate a day that promises to be special, or simply a moment that deserves. A song from background, an image that hang in the glove compartment”.

Hello folks,

You may remember a little while back I introduced you to the fab online bridal boutique, Britten, full of original wedding accessories, ranging from peacock feather fans, to garters, to hair combs to feather buttonholes.

Well it seems Spring has been a very busy time for Britten, with exhibitions at two bridal fairs (Bristol Vintage Wedding Fair and A Most Curious Wedding Fair), a brand new website www.brittenweddings.co.uk, and the launch of some lovely new pieces including deco style purses and lariats, statement headbands and ostrich feather fans. Did you know every single piece you see in the Britten collection is delicately handmade in a tiny workshop just outside Bath? A true artisan business.

The purses are my favourite- just big enough to hold the requisite lippy, some tissues and your lucky sixpence. As each design is made to order, I can easily create a custom piece, whether a different colour, size or something totally bespoke.

We have also collaborated with Oxfam on their first ever wedding auction. You can bid on a deco set which includes our Ginger Feather Fan and Evie Purse with the auction starting at £0.99!

Packing for Paris ~ Top Tips from Rebecca of Florence Finds

Good afternoon folks,

You may remember my recent request for your hot tips on things to do and see in Paris (so many great tips, thank-you), well today it’s all about what to wear, or rather what to pack for the trip.

As any girl heading to such a chic and stylish City will know, packing can often turn into a bit of a nightmare. For my faire un voyage I want to feel comfortable throughout as it will involve lots of walking and taking in of sights, as well as sampling the gastronomic delights the City has to offer, but of course I still want to look stylish too. My tendency with trips away is to last-minute panic buy, pack way too much and end up with a case full of lovely, yet useless items that simply don’t work together.

And as any planner knows, a good holiday wardrobe takes careful thought and consideration, it takes time to plan the perfect selection of items that will keep you looking de rigueur and not just bedraggled.

So in my hour of need I did what any sensible girl would do and turned to a trusted and oh-so-fashionable friend for some suggestions. I am so absolutely delighted that Rebecca of Florence Finds blog is here today to solve my packing quandary with a few fabulous tips for staying stylish.

♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦

Hi! It’s Rebecca here from Florence Finds, swooping in to help Michelle out with her packing dilemma for her upcoming trip to Paris. Jealous much? Read on for my outfit suggestions and packing tips to make a few outfits go further in the style stakes. (Note: I have used a restricted number of brands playing on the items Michelle already has, but you don’t have to go and clear the shelves of H&M to get the look. Work with what you have and scout around for a couple of holiday pieces to add to your capsule holiday wardrobe.)

Michelle’s Brief: “The trip ~ A girls weekend in Paris for 3 days and 4 nights; mainly sightseeing and wandering, with dinner and cocktails most evenings.

It may help to know some of the items in my wardrobe currently, which are coloured jeans (turquoise, pale green, bright pink, electric blue,) a sequinned sweater and mainly black jackets.”

It was Michelle’s turquoise jeans that first caught my eye from her list of items. I’m having a bit of a love affair with mint right now and thought it would be fun to work the mermaid trend into her wardrobe with a bit of glitz from her sequin jumper. That’s two outfits taken care of already and with a switch from flats to heels, (in neutral metallics so they blend with both outfits), you’ve just doubled your packing potential. Glam up your evening outfit with chunky modern jewellery and a jacket if it’s chilly, or if you want to up the formality. I chose a neutral clutch with a strap that works for sight seeing (look for one with a longer strap to go across your body and keep your hands free) which can then be tucked away to use as a clutch in the evening.

Turquoise Jeans – Warehouse // Ballet flats – H&M //
Gold sequin Jumper – H&M // Striped long jumper – H&M //
Bag – H&M // Jewellery – all H&M

If you don’t have a pair of ballet flats or want to give the look a little edge, it’ll look just as good with converse, or glitzy flip flops in the event of good weather.

Of course, you can’t go to Paris without a nod to the breton stripe and I found this long striped cotton jumper in H&M. With gold button detail it looks smart yet it’s comfortable enough for a days walking around, or even to travel in. Throw in a stripy tee for extra layers and an extra look. Everyone has a stripy tee, right?

Mint blouse – Zara // Turquoise Jeans – Warehouse //
Striped Top – H&M // Mint Jacket – Zara // Jewellery – all H&M //
Metallic Heels – Dune // Bag – H&M

Lastly, unless you’re a particularly stringent packer, you may not want to stay in the same pair of trousers for 4 days straight. ;) I’m a huge fan of a pink trouser and have this H&M pair myself, so I know exactly how versatile they are. Dress them up or down with one of your existing jackets and make the pair do double duty by switching your top and adding or paring back your jewellery.

Pink Jeans – H&M // Black Jacket – Warehouse // Ballet flats – H&M //
Striped Top – H&M // Gold sequin Jumper - H&M // Metallic Heels – Dune // Jewellery – all H&M

It’s worth noting that all the jewellery here is a little bit edgy, all gold and therefore works with each different outfit, (both the mint shirt and striped jumper have gold detailing,) just add more or less according to the look.

Rebecca’s Tips:
  • Sling in a dress for the evening. If you happen to have one that matches your predominant colour way (turquoise or mint here for example) then you can layer it with a jumper or your blazer for a couple of different looks. You already have your shoes and clutch covered as they’re neutral!
  • Think about taking a metallic or statement belt and pack a statement necklace for evening to ramp up the shirt a notch.
  • Don’t underestimate the power of a bit of eyeliner or a colour pop lip. They’re small but can take a daytime look right into the evening, just by upping the glam factor.
  • Lastly, compromise! It’s 4 days and you are with your friends. They won’t be counting the ways you make one pair of trousers work. These tips are to save you time packing and space in your case, not to stress you out about having to look perfect 24/7.

Au Revoir!

Rebecca

O.M.G. How amazing is this? I think I may be setting up a hotline to Miss Florence in future so she can solve all my What to Wear dilemmas. I will be trying very hard to stick to Rebecca’s tips to make the most of my current wardrobe and make my items work harder. Merci Rebecca, Merci.

So what do you think guys, has Rebecca inspired your packing choices? Is there a must-have, versatile item that’s your trip away essential, do share? Don’t forget I’ve another week or so before heading to Paris so please do pop by the original post to add your tips on things to do and see while I’m there.

Much love,

Make-up Tutorial: How to get a Retro Beauty look by Dani Hawley

Hello folks,

It’s nearly the weekend so I thought I’d share another fabulous make-up tutorial with you from my good friend and talented make-up artist Dani Hawley.

Dani has previously shared her secrets with us about how to achieve a golden smokey eye, her colour-pop Plum and Berry make-up look as well as insider tips on how to create the perfect flick.

Now we’re going full-on retro-inspired hollywood glamour, here’s Dani to show you how to perfect the look…..

 ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦

Retro-glamour is such a classic and glamorous look which is all about contouring, a sexy flicked out eyeliner and of course the pillow box red lip! If you love a little retro then try this out for a modern take on a classic style.

Beauty, Bridal make-up, Vintage make-up, Vintage InspiredDani Hawley, Fashion, Vintage Beauty, How to get the perfect flick, Make-Up Artist North-West, Makeup Trends, Party Looks, Pocketful of Dreams, Retro Makeup, Styling, Wedding Beauty, Winged Eyeliner (2)

{step one} I started with my foundation (Illamasqua skin base, applied with a Real Techniques Stippling brush)  I work it well into the skin and then concealed all blemishes and under the eyes (MAC select cover up)  I then powdered (MAC prep and Prime Translucent finishing powder – presses) all over to set the foundation before contouring.  I then contoured the face (MAC Matte bronze – bronzing powder and a Real Techniques contour brush)  I worked under the cheekbones, temples, hairline and jawbone.  50s Hollywood was heavy on the contouring.

{step two} I then worked a nude matte cream eyeshadow (MAC paint pot – Painterly) all over the lid and blend to the brow with a Mac 217 brush as a base.  I then take a cream coloured eyeshadow and go over the top with a 230 brush (Chanel eyeshadow quad 18 Kaska beige  (lightest shade) http://tiny.cc/wuyd8 – I love love love this palette by the way, I use it all the time, would highly recommend it as a “must have in your make up bag!! I then use the second lighted shade with a MAC 222 brush and blended that into the socket crease.  The brow shape it also really important with a 50s look, they have a pointed top and curved underneath.  I created this shaped with a black and brown eyeshadow mixed together (MAC, Carbon and Mystery) with a MAC 208 brush.

{step three} Now onto “the flick”  to get the perfect flick, please see my tutorial on liquid eyeliner.  I created this with a black gel eyeliner and a brush (MAC fluidline – blacktracs and a 209 brush) use black pencil eyeliner on the upper water line (Clarins waterproof – black) Curl lashes and apply black mascara to the top and bottom lashes.

{step four} 50s Hollywood loved the ‘half’ lashes.  You can by half lashes but I used full lashes and cut them in half, discarding the long end and applying them to the outer corner of the eyes.  (Ardel fashion lashed 102 Demi)  I am really in to these ARDEL lashes at the moment, they are made from human hair and are really good value for money! You can get them here http://tiny.cc/o1m8b  If you are no used to applying lashes, wearing “half lashes” is a really good way to practice the application, as they are much easier to handle!  I then finished the eye with a cream coloured eyeliner on the lower waterline (Illamasqua pencil – Vow)

{to finish}  I finished the look with a little extra contouring (Mac matte bronzer) blush (MAC pinch me) and I applied a powder highlighter to the high points of the cheek bones (Laura Mercier, star dust)  I used a red lip liner (MAC Redd) and a matte red lipstick (MAC – Roby woo) and then drew on a beauty spot with some black gel liner.

♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦

Such a striking look, I can’t wait to give this one a go. Who’s with me?

Thanks once again to Dani for another fab tutorial, you can follow Dani on Twitter for regular make-up tips and tricks and please do check out her work here. Dani is based in the North West and available for wedding make-up, creative editorial photoshoots and more.

Dream Find: Hope and Grace ~ Bridal Accessories

Ladies, if you are getting married this year then you need to remember this name: Hope and Grace.

Providing the most stylish and utterly gorgeous bridal accessories throughout the UK they are one of my dream finds and one that set my pretty-radar off with a big bang.

I will admit that many wedding accessories are a bit blah….or they veer too much into the princess route for my liking.  But these ones are style-personified, real statement pieces.

And just how beautifully dreamy are these images?

Hope and Grace, Bridal Accessories, Wedding Accessories, Bridal Headpieces, Bridal Headbands, Bridal Hats, Statement Headpieces, Bridal Millinery, Vintage Inspired, Bridal Combs, Bridal Shrugs, Bridal Veil (2)

Nina Pepper, one-half of the creative duo behind the brand told me:

“The idea for Hope & Grace came about after a very long search for bridal accessories for our own weddings. We both wanted accessories that were a bit more fashion-forward but completely wearable at the same time. Eventually we spent more time looking for accessories than we had looking for our wedding dresses, so we decided there was a real need for accessories what were beautifully designed and made.

For the last two years we have searched for beautiful products and have ended up collaborating with and sourcing from some amazing designers including Kate Middleton’s favourite milliner, Vivien Sherrif and Australia’s Peter Lang.

Rather than being led by a particular style or era we wanted our products to be connected by stunning design, quality craftsmanship and the most beautiful materials. Most of all we want our accessories to be loved (and in many cases worn) long after the wedding day.

With materials including leather and wire we hope that we have brought something a little different to the world of bridal accessories. Leather and wire aside our collection includes beautifully feminine oversized flower headdresses through to stunning 1920’s inspired Swarovski crystal headpieces for brides looking for a bit of Gatsby glamour. We hope we have a little bit of gorgeousness for everyone.”

Dream Team: Welcoming Corrine Smith Design ~ Bridal Accessories

Good morning folks,

Today I am so pleased to be able to introduce you to another superb Dream Team member ~ Corrine Smith Design, specialists in creating award winning bridal accessories and offering an unrivalled collection of handcrafted wedding tiaras, wedding headbands, wedding hair accessories, vintage tiaras and wedding jewellery to customers from their gorgeous boutique in Kilmarnock, Scotland. They also supply their beautiful ranges to brides, bridesmaids, mother of the bride/groom and wedding guests across the UK from their online store at www.corrinesmith.com.

I have actually been lucky enough to wear one of the amazing headpieces from the Corrine Smith Design collection, you may remember my little trip to a certain soiree not so long ago, well I got to wear a gorgeous creation called the Ophelia and I must say ~ I felt like a million dollars all night in my sparkly headpiece.

The lovely Corrine told me all about her exclusive accessories boutique….“I live in Ayrshire, Scotland with my husband and 5 year old son. I am a bridal accessories designer and I love my job!

Ever since I was a little girl I have been fascinated by the creative process and have always loved making things. At school I was encouraged to follow a more academic path and studied European Business Law at University. I always knew that I would follow my heart and end up where I am now. I set up my business on a part time basis in 2004 and over the next few years worked every spare minute building my reputation within the wedding industry. In 2010 I gave up my day job to run my business full time and opened my first boutique. This is probably the best decision I have ever made and my business has continued to grow and exceed all of my expectations. I have just recently moved into a much bigger and better premises complete with luxurious showroom, office, workroom and consultation room.

Corrine Smith Design, bridal accessories, unrivalled collection, handcrafted, wedding tiaras, wedding headbands, wedding hair accessories, vintage tiaras, wedding jewellery, UK, brides, bridesmaids, mother of the bride, mother of the groom, wedding guests (2)

Do you have a particular style and can you describe it for us?

I don’t like to categorize my designs as belonging to a particular style. Being a creative person I am always exploring new ideas, styles and techniques. I love vintage and contemporary designs in equal measure and love to incorporate elements of both into my designs. One common theme throughout all of my work is the application of meticulous attention to detail and the use of the highest quality materials.

Corrine Smith Design, bridal accessories, unrivalled collection, handcrafted, wedding tiaras, wedding headbands, wedding hair accessories, vintage tiaras, wedding jewellery, UK, brides, bridesmaids, mother of the bride, mother of the groom, wedding guests (3)

What / who inspires your designs?

I draw inspiration from so many different places, but my biggest inspiration undoubtedly comes from the brides that I work so closely with on a daily basis. Most of the designs in my current collections are heavily influenced by the hundreds of bespoke designs I have created for brides over the years.

Corrine Smith Design, bridal accessories, unrivalled collection, handcrafted, wedding tiaras, wedding headbands, wedding hair accessories, vintage tiaras, wedding jewellery, UK, brides, bridesmaids, mother of the bride, mother of the groom, wedding guests (5)

What makes your products unique?

Each and every piece that leaves my studio has been made with love by myself especially for the wearer, which means that customizing an existing design is always a possibility. I think there is something really special about having a piece made for you, rather than buying an off the shelf headdress that may have been tried on countless times before. I am dedicated to providing my clients with quality products and I am also very passionate about offering excellent service on all levels and I am extremely proud of the fact that I have won the ‘Best Bridal Accessories’ category at the www.vowsawards.co.uk consecutively for the last 4 years.

What is currently hot in the world of bridal accessories?

At the moment I am seeing a move away from structured designs and an increasing demand for feminine delicate pieces with a slightly organic feel. Bohemian style headdresses and browbands are also very popular just now. Headwear that can be worn again and again after the wedding day is always a great investment and this is always something I discuss with my brides at consultations.

What about future trends, what is going to be popular in the future?

The trends in bridal accessories are very much influenced by the upcoming collections by bridal dress designers, and whilst the vintage trend is set to stay around a little longer I have seen the emergence of lots of classically cut bridal gowns with a contemporary edge and I’m really looking forward to creating some new pieces and getting started on my next collection.

Which bride (past, present or future) would be your dream bride to wear one of your designs?

I know it probably sounds a bit corny but I have a fantastic time working with all of my brides and if it wasn’t for my clients I wouldn’t be able to do what I love. Having said that I’m pretty excited about designing accessories for my 3 gorgeous nieces when the time comes for them to get married.

Corrine Smith Design, bridal accessories, unrivalled collection, handcrafted, wedding tiaras, wedding headbands, wedding hair accessories, vintage tiaras, wedding jewellery, UK, brides, bridesmaids, mother of the bride, mother of the groom, wedding guests (8)

Who would you love to work/collaborate with and why? Do you have any plans to make this happen?

I would love to collaborate with a dress designer and design a range of headdresses to compliment a collection of couture gowns. This is something that could be happening later this year but I don’t want to give too much away just yet, so as they say…..watch this space!

Corrine Smith Design, bridal accessories, unrivalled collection, handcrafted, wedding tiaras, wedding headbands, wedding hair accessories, vintage tiaras, wedding jewellery, UK, brides, bridesmaids, mother of the bride, mother of the groom, wedding guests (7)

Can you share with us a sneak-peak exclusive of future plans for your business / goals for this year?

For quite some time it has been an ambition of mine to make my designs available to a group of exclusive stockists throughout the UK and further afield. Ideally bridal boutiques would stock sample designs and order from me when a bride orders from them which means that I can stick to my principles and still create a piece especially for an individual bride. This is another exciting development for my business and I am totally committed to continuing to provide first class service and beautiful products to my stockists and individual clients alike.

When you are not crafting and creating what are you doing?

When I’m not crafting and creating I’m usually thinking about crafting and creating. What I do is my passion and it can be very difficult to switch off completely. I love to spend time with my family though and Sundays are dedicated to getting out and having fun.

What is your ultimate dream in life?

For years my dream was to be in the position I am now, being able to do what I love as my job. I am extremely proud of what I have achieved so far and I’m pretty excited about where the rest of my journey is going to take me. As far as I am concerned I have the best job in the world and I am so very grateful for that.

Make-Up Tutorial: How to Get the Perfect Flick by Dani Hawley Make Up Artist

Hello folks,

It’s nearly the weekend, time to kick back and party. Well for some of us it may be that time, I will actually be here this weekend for the London Blogshop, I may be working and flexing my creative muscle but I will also be learning a hell of a lot about blogging, photoshop and the like as I continually strive to make Pocketful of Dreams better and better. I am so flipping excited about what’s to come over the next two days and cannot wait to meet Bri and all the other lovely bloggers who will be attending. Full report on my little adventure will be coming up very soon.

♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦

Today I thought I would bring you another amazing beauty tutorial by my great and gorgeous friend Dani Hawley.

Dani is a talented make-up artist, based in the North West and has previously shared her secrets with us about how to achieve a golden smokey eye, as well as her colour-pop Plum and Berry make-up look.

Now she is showing us how to create the perfect flick. The retro-inspired flick, or winged eyeliner to us non-make-up professionals is such a hot trend for Spring. From the runways to celebrities, everyone is after a little retro glamour so here’s Dani to show you how to prefect the look…..

How to get the perfect Flick by Dani Hawley for Pocketful of Dreams

This is something I am asked constantly at the moment, as it is such a huge trend, but it can be quite difficult to master.  So I thought I would do a quick tutorial on how to get the perfect liquid eyeliner.

The key to this is to take your time, and stick with it.  Practice really does make perfect.  I know liquid eyeliner looks like it’s been drawn in one swoop, however that is not the case.

I personally get the best result with a gel liner, but you can use a pencil or a liquid, just use whatever works best for you.  The product I am using here is a MAC gel liner (fluidline – blacktracks) I am also using a MAC 109 brush, but again, use which ever brush you prefer.

    1. Start by decanting a small amount of product on the back of your hand.  I find this the best way to work the gel liner into my brush, and manipulate my brush into a pointed shape.
    2. I then push the product well into the lash line.  This does not have to be neat at this stage.  It just makes sure there will be no flesh showing between the lashes and the liner.  There is nothing worse than a  “floating” eyeliner
    3. I then add more product to the brush and reshape it to the point again.  Take the line nice and thin into the inner corner of the eye, right to the tear duct.  Also neaten up the top of the line across the lashes and it’s neat and smooth.
    4. Plot in the flick.  Do this lightly to start with, so if you make a mistake you can change it.  I look straight forwards in the mirror and draw the first line form the bottom lashes and upwards.  Then working back from the point flick, gently sketch and join it to the line created on the top of the lashes.
    5. Once you are happy with the position of the flick, add more product to your brush again and fill in the line.  A perfect liner should start thin, then thicken up and it flows over the lashes and finish to a nice slim point.
    6. The finished flick.

Love will always win out: David Fielden’s 2012 Collection and words from the designer

I am so pleased to announce that David Fielden has just launched his new 2012 collection. One of my absolute favourite designers for his exquisite works of art, David manages to combine a really romantic and ethereal style with a hip and cool vibe, giving his gowns a real rocky edge.

This season David Fielden’s collection is based on mixing fabrics and textures in bold shapes. David has used sleek matt satins to create a look which is both modern and sophisticated yet still understated glamour.

Draping and manipulating the fabric into innovative drapes to create angular lines, which are then juxtaposed with a touch of feminine detail, with the use elegant trims and exquisite corded lace as a contrast. David incorporates the use of light chiffons and tulle to create a more voluminous silhouette which is embellished using delicate detail to give a deconstructed style straight off the pages of Shakespeare’s The Tempest.

David kindly answered a few of my questions to give us a little insight into the mind of this incredible talented designer…..

Where do you get your inspiration from and what inspired this collection?

I am inspired by everything around me. I have a great interest in all the arts. My background was in dance and theater and this influences my thoughts and ideas. For the 2012 Collection I have explored the idea that we live in an intransigent world with world affairs effecting our everyday lives, with the fashion show I wanted to capture the idea that love will always win out. The ethereal quality of the dresses were offset by the urban destruction around them which created a dynamic contrast. The 2012 collection experiments with shape and silhouette, this is done with the use of draping and manipulating fabrics to create angular lines which are juxtaposed with feminine details.

Describe the type of woman who wears your gowns?

A David Fielden Bride is a women who has her own sense of style and truly wants a dress which is at the cutting edge of fashion.

Your advice for brides-to-be on choosing a wedding dress?

Trust your instincts and always follow your heart… <3

Very wise words.
