The Art of an Authentic Celebration that feels as good as it looks.

In Conversation

In conversation with our founder and Creative Director Michelle Kelly on why Pocketful of Dreams believes in authentic celebrations, considered gatherings, and design that feels as good as it looks.

You describe your work as authentic celebrations and considered gatherings. What do those words mean to you in practice?

For me, those words capture the heart of what we do. Authenticity is everything, it’s about crafting a celebration that genuinely reflects who our clients are, not just what’s trending. Every wedding or event we create should feel lived-in, personal and emotionally resonant, not manufactured.

We never design for show; we design for feeling.

It’s the difference between a day that looks beautiful in photos and one that your guests talk about for years because it made them feel something.

And what does a considered gathering look like in your world?

A considered gathering is intentional in every sense: the pace, the design, the flow, the atmosphere. It’s not about excess, it’s about meaning.

We think about how people will move through a space, how they’ll interact, where the light falls at golden hour, and how a moment will sound, smell and feel. It’s a form of emotional design.

Our team might spend hours refining a guest journey: what they see first, what they touch, how the transitions unfold. Because when you consider every layer, sensory, logistical, emotional — that’s when true magic happens.

“Luxury isn’t about more, it’s about thought and intention.”

You often talk about design that feels as good as it looks. How do you achieve that balance?

So much of event design today focuses on visual impact, but we believe it should go deeper. Aesthetics matter, of course but if beauty isn’t supported by structure and flow, it falls flat.

For us, to say a wedding or party ‘feels as good as it looks’ essentially means design and logistics are two sides of the same coin. We’ll obsess over linen textures and lighting angles with the same precision we apply to supplier timelines and guest transport. Because when both align, you get that feeling of effortlessness that guests can’t quite articulate, but they know it when they experience it.

It’s about marrying style with soul — that’s when design becomes unforgettable.

How does this philosophy shape your creative process with clients?

It begins with listening. Before we ever talk colour palettes or table layouts, we ask our clients to tell us their story: what inspires them, what home feels like, what moments matter most.

Then we translate that into atmosphere and form: the way a dinner should feel, the tempo of a weekend, the tone of the space. That’s where authenticity is born, from storytelling, not styling.

And because we’re a full-service studio, we’re involved in everything from creative direction to logistics, so that design vision carries through every detail.

What do you hope guests feel when they attend a Pocketful of Dreams celebration?

Ease, warmth, connection.

When a guest walks into one of our events, I want them to feel instantly at home, even if they’re surrounded by grandeur. It’s that balance between elegance and emotion that defines our work.

At the end of the night, it’s not the linen or lighting they’ll remember, it’s how they felt sitting under the candlelight, surrounded by laughter, immersed in an atmosphere that just felt right.

And for you personally, what’s the reward in all of this?

It’s the moment where everything clicks, the music softens, the candles flicker, guests are laughing and connecting, and you can feel the atmosphere humming. That’s when I know we’ve done our job.

Because design, at its best, isn’t just about aesthetics. It’s about crafting human moments: considered, authentic, and deeply felt.

Every Pocketful of Dreams celebration begins with story and intention. Whether it’s a weekend-long wedding in the countryside or a private dinner for a brand launch, our approach remains the same: artistry with structure, beauty with purpose, and design that feels as good as it looks.
