The Power of Dress Codes

An Expert Guide to Creating Clarity, Confidence and Cohesion

A wedding’s magic lies in more than the florals and the table settings, it’s in how everything feels. The mood, the rhythm, the way each guest seems perfectly at ease because they know exactly how to show up and what’s expected of them.

That’s why dress codes matter. They’re not about imposing rules, but about creating harmony: a shared visual language that brings everyone onto the same page. When guests understand the tone of the celebration, they arrive not with uncertainty, but with excitement. And when couples provide thoughtful, clear direction, they save themselves a flurry of last-minute texts asking, “Is this okay to wear?”

At Pocketful of Dreams, we always create a guiding moodboard for our clients to share with their guests via the wedding website. Filled with textures, colours, and visual cues, it shows not just what to wear but how it should feel,  refined yet relaxed, elegant yet effortless. For our couples, it means fewer logistical questions and more energy spent where it matters: enjoying the anticipation of a day that looks and feels cohesive from every angle.

Decoding the Dress Codes

WHITE-TIE DRESS CODE

The most formal of all dress codes, for white-tie think royal banquets and glittering evenings. In practice: sweeping gowns, tails and gloves, the epitome of stately glamour, best suited to grand manor house weddings.

As Tatler explains:

“For men, this is a black single-breasted tailcoat with lapels that are shorter at the front than a morning coat. This is teamed with black trousers that have two lines of braid down the outside leg, a white cotton piqué shirt, closed with studs, with a starched detachable wing collar and double cuffs. This would be worn with a white evening waistcoat, white hand-tied bow tie and polished or patent black lace-up shoes.

For women, a White-Tie dress code is less formal but a full-length evening gown would be expected (something short won’t go down well) and this is a time to get out your biggest, sparkliest pieces of jewellery – including tiaras”

BLACK-TIE DRESS CODE

Elegant, timeless and universally flattering, the dress code that never goes out of style. A black-tie wedding carries a certain gravitas: it transforms the atmosphere from celebration to occasion. Think candlelight glinting off glassware, string quartets echoing through historic halls, and guests arriving in their finest with a sense of quiet anticipation.

For women, this means floor-length gowns or sophisticated separates in luxurious fabrics like silk, chiffon, or velvet, pieces that move beautifully and photograph effortlessly. For men, a classic tuxedo or tailored dinner jacket sets the tone, perfectly finished with a bow tie and polished shoes.

At Pocketful of Dreams, we love the way black-tie creates cohesion: when every guest feels dressed to the same level of refinement, the event instantly feels elevated yet unforced, a true study in understated glamour.

As Vogue notes:

“Simply put, ‘black tie’ for women best translates as “long”, and in an evening-appropriate fabric, such as velvet, chiffon, silk or lace.”

“A man must wear a tuxedo at a black-tie wedding in a black hue with a bowtie either in black or another dark—yet not flashy—shade. Men’s shoes should be black Oxfords, opera pumps, Venetian loafers, or velvet slippers.”

BLACK-TIE OPTIONAL / FORMAL DRESS CODE

A formal dress code is more flexible version of black-tie that allows for expression without losing refinement. A tuxedo is welcomed but not essential, a dark, tailored suit is just as acceptable. Women can embrace midi or full-length dresses with a polished finish.

“A black-tie optional wedding gives guests the freedom to dress up without the pressure of a strict dress code,”

MORNING DRESS – DRESS CODE

The hallmark of traditional British daytime formality, morning dress is most often seen at society weddings, royal events and historic estates, think elegant ceremony followed by a garden luncheon. It carries a certain timeless charm, rooted in heritage but still relevant for couples seeking a refined, classic aesthetic.

For men, this means a morning coat (usually black or charcoal), striped trousers, a waistcoat in dove grey or pastel hues, and a crisp shirt with a tie. A top hat and pocket square complete the look for the most formal occasions.

For women, daytime formalwear is key, typically a tailored or midi-length dress with a structured silhouette, paired with a hat and refined accessories. Light, elegant fabrics and soft colour palettes work beautifully, especially for spring or summer ceremonies.

It’s a dress code that photographs beautifully, full of grace and proportion, and one that instantly elevates the atmosphere of a countryside wedding, formal yet undeniably romantic.

COCKTAIL / SEMI-FORMAL

Effortless sophistication with a sense of fun, cocktail attire strikes that beautiful balance between relaxed and refined. It’s the dress code most couples gravitate toward for its versatility; formal enough to feel special, yet relaxed enough for guests to truly enjoy themselves.

Think of it as an invitation to embrace personality and polish in equal measure. For women, that might mean a beautifully cut midi dress, a statement jumpsuit, or tailored separates in rich fabrics and tonal layers. For men, a well-fitted suit in a dark or seasonally appropriate hue, paired with smart shoes and subtle accessories, is ideal.

Vogue defines it as:

“What’s appropriate for a cocktail attire dress code can vary depending on the occasion, the time of year, and even the hosts. But there are some key rules to keep in mind. While you can undoubtedly wear trousers, consider leaving the denim in your closet and pairing your pants with a dressier silk top or one that has a more sophisticated silhouette than a basic t-shirt.”

CREATIVE OR THEMED DRESS CODES

The fashion set’s new favourite. “Garden glamour,” “modern heritage,” “Cotswold chic” all phrases we’ve seen grace invitations in recent seasons.  These are the creative dress codes where your planner’s styling direction really shines, setting the tone for a celebration that’s deeply personal yet cohesive.

The Guardian writes:

“The old rules were about obedience to societal norms, whereas the new rules are about obedience to the whims of a specific couple. A dress code, or a moodboard setting the aesthetic which guests are expected to adhere to, is pretty normal now.”

Practical Tips for Guests

  • Avoid white (and anything close to it). Unless the couple specifically request an all-white dress code, it’s best avoided and still preferred by most brides
  • Dress for the environment. Grass, gravel or grand ballrooms all demand different footwear and fabrics. We always have heel stoppers on hand for guests attending weddings with an outdoor element, nobody wants their Manolo heels sinking into grass.
  • Think texture and tone. Luxe fabrics like velvet and silk elevate formality; cottons and linens suit outdoor and Summer casual settings better.
  • When in doubt, ask or reference the moodboard. It’s there to help you.

For Multicultural Celebrations

Dress codes are a form of storytelling, especially for multicultural weddings where attire carries deep cultural significance.

For one of our recent Indian-British fusion weddings, each event across a multi-day weekend had its own tone: the Sangeet was an explosion of colour and tradition, with guests encouraged to wear Indian formalwear. We created a guide explaining everything from lehengas to saris and sherwanis, complete with sourcing links for guests across the UK and US, plus rental suggestions.

This approach helped guests feel confident and included, turning curiosity into connection and creating a shared sense of celebration rooted in respect and joy.

Guidance for Bridesmaids

Modern bridesmaids no longer need to look identical, but they do need direction.
We often curate visual styling boards for bridal parties, outlining the colour palette, texture, and silhouette cues to maintain visual harmony while allowing individuality to shine.

Whether it’s “floral patterned long gowns” or “earthy tones in floaty fabrics,” these parameters guide your bridal party to make confident, cohesive choices. The result is an aesthetic that feels both unified and effortless, a reflection of your overall design story rather than an afterthought.

Over the Moon advises:

“Brides no longer want to see their favorite women in cookie-cutter silhouettes. Instead, they want everyone to feel comfortable and look their personal best.”

Hiring dresses: A smart & sustainable choice

Choosing to rent rather than buy makes style feel thoughtful and intentional, just like the celebration itself.  It’s a conscious choice that keeps wardrobes circular.

Rentals from designer platforms mean guests can wear stunning pieces from the likes of Galvan, Roksanda or Zimmerman without commitment, waste or wardrobe guilt.

For US-based guests, consider luxury rental sites such as Rent the Runway, and The Luxe Lend or for the UK try Hurr and ByRotation, all offer some really beautiful high-end designer gowns for special occasions.

Your team looking the part, is important too

We believe in living the experience we curate. Our team always dresses in line with the event’s dress code, whether that’s black-tie, garden glamour or modern heritage, we ensure that we blend seamlessly into the aesthetic while remaining practical and polished.

We often source our looks from rental platforms ,choosing sustainable style that reflects the same consideration and attention to detail we bring to every celebration.

Why it all matters

Dress codes are about inclusion, not exclusion, they help guests feel prepared, confident, and beautifully aligned with the atmosphere of the day.

For couples, it’s one less thing to worry about. With clear direction, guests arrive feeling part of something special: a celebration that looks incredible, but more importantly, feels harmonious and intentional.
